    I suppose that only works because it's pre-fixed with a positive adjective.

    It seems to be used to mean someone cheeky, a bit like calling someone a 'cheeky monkey' around here, I've no idea how it became a mild swear word considering it's meaning

    I think it's probably one of the first words most babies hear around where I used to live. As soon as they're born you've got visitors at the hospital picking them up, putting their face close up and telling them a combination of stuff like 'you're a little bugger', who's a little bugger'. Sometimes they don't even bother with surrounding it with other words and they just say bugger in a combination of different funny voices.

    I've never done it and it's not a word I've ever used. My husband isn't northern, so he finds it very strange that northerners use it as a term of affection.
