BBC News - Ukraine crisis: Ceasefire with rebels holds

A ceasefire agreed by the Ukrainian government and pro-Russia rebels in the east appears to be holding.

There were no confirmed reports of fighting overnight, after the deal was struck in Minsk in Belarus on Friday.

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko says there should now be talks about a long-term solution to the conflict, which has killed about 2,600 people.

However, the rebels said the ceasefire had not changed their policy of wanting to separate from Ukraine.

The BBC's Richard Galpin in Donetsk says that overnight he had not heard any of the heavy artillery barrages that took place before the truce, although there were some unconfirmed reports that Ukrainian army positions had been shelled near Donetsk airport.
Ukraine ceasefire holds so far as Poroshenko orders halt at dusk | World news | The Guardian

A tentative ceasefire was holding in eastern Ukraine on Friday night after Kiev agreed a truce with separatist rebels that included a pullback of weapons and the release of prisoners; it held out the best hope so far for an end to a five-month conflict that has killed more than 2,000 people.

Ukraine's president, Petro Poroshenko, ordered government forces to stop fighting at dusk, while negotiators in Minsk finally came up with agreements on prisoner exchanges and the delivery of humanitarian aid, putting some substance on the fragile outline of the ceasefire.

But there was scepticism over whether the more radical elements on either side would obey the ceasefire, and concern in Kiev and western capitals that the truce would effectively "freeze" the conflict and give Moscow de facto control over the disputed chunk of eastern Ukraine that has been ruined by war this summer.
How long before it kicks-off again I wonder...

BBC News - Ukraine crisis: Shelling near Mariupol threatens truce

Explosions have been heard in the south-eastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol, despite a ceasefire agreed by the government and pro-Russian rebels.

A BBC correspondent there says intense blasts from the eastern edges rippled across the city late on Saturday. The fighting subsided overnight.

Mariupol is seen by the rebels as a key city on the route to Crimea.

On Saturday, the Ukrainian and Russian presidents said the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine was "largely holding".

It was signed during talks between representatives of Ukraine, Russia, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and pro-Russia rebels in Belarus and came into effect at on Friday.

There were no reports of major fighting in the east for the first 24 hours, but by Saturday evening the BBC's Fergal Keane tweeted from Mariupol that shelling had resumed.

    Default Ukraine conflict 'war crimes'

Ukrainian militia and separatist forces are responsible for war crimes, Amnesty International said today. The organisation accused Russia of fuelling separatist crimes as it revealed satellite images indicating a build-up of Russian armour and artillery in eastern Ukraine.

Despite a fragile cease-fire, the situation on the ground remains fraught with danger and Amnesty International calls on all parties, including Russia, to stop violations of the laws of war.

“All sides in this conflict have shown disregard for civilian lives and are blatantly violating their international obligations,” said Salil Shetty, Amnesty International’s Secretary General, who travels to Kyiv and Moscow in the coming days.

“Our evidence shows that Russia is fuelling the conflict, both through direct interference and by supporting the separatists in the East. Russia must stop the steady flow of weapons and other support to an insurgent force heavily implicated in gross human rights violations.”

    Default Protests in Russia

By Alexei Anishchuk, Reuters (via Yahoo):

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Thousands of Russians marched in protest against the armed conflict in Ukraine on Sunday in the first major anti-war rally since the start of the standoff between Kiev and pro-Russian rebels.

The armed conflict, which Kiev and the West blame on Russia's support of the separatist armed groups in eastern Ukraine, has killed more than 3,000 people since April, although this month's ceasefire has brought a relative calm.

The organisers of "The March for peace" said over 50,000 people were expected to take the streets in Moscow alone on Sunday afternoon and deliver a strong message to President Vladimir Putin: stop the war. Protests were also expected in other cities across Russia.

Moscow police said 5,000 people attended the march. Protesters often accuse police of underestimating the size of anti-Kremlin rallies, and opposition protests also get limited coverage on state TV.

"Putin means war, he is the leader of the party of war," one of the organisers and prominent Kremlin critic Boris Nemtsov said by phone. "If there are a lot of us today, he will back down, because... he is afraid of his own citizens, and only the Russian people can stop Putin."

A Reuters correspondent said at least several thousand protesters packed Moscow's central Tverskaya street on Sunday afternoon amid increased police presence, which included a helicopter overseeing the area.

Russian and Ukrainian flags were seen flying in the crowd, as banners read "We are together", "Putin, I'm sick of your lies" and "I don't want a war with Ukraine." Protesters were heard chanting "No to war."

"The message of this march is to call on our authorities to stop this outrageous covert war that they don't admit (waging)," said Yelena Volkova, a protester in her 50s wearing a Ukraine flag above a traditional Ukrainian shirt, or 'vyshyvank'.

"Russia should withdraw its mercenaries from the territory of Ukraine, and then everything will be fine," said a man in his 40s who only gave his first name, Gennady. He held two blue and yellow balloons, the colours of Ukraine's flag.

    Press TV:

PressTV - Protesters slam Russia policy on Ukraine crisis

Thousands of Russians have held a protest rally in Moscow to denounce the Kremlin’s policy toward the crisis in Ukraine.

Demonstrators on Sunday took to the streets in capital city of Moscow to condemn what they called Russia’s involvement in the conflict.

Waving flags and chanting slogans, the protesters demanded the Russian government help to ease the tension in Ukraine’s east, where a military operation by Ukrainian government has been underway since mid-April.

The protesters also raised concerns over the imposed sanctions by the US and the EU against Russia, saying they might hit the country’s economy in the near future.

Organizers said thousands of protesters are expected to take to the streets in Moscow on Sunday in the first major anti-war rally since the conflict broke out in Ukraine almost five months ago.

Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have witnessed deadly clashes since Kiev launched military operations to silence the pro-Russian protesters there. According to reports, More than 2,700 people have been killed in the conflict.

Default Troop withdrawal in doubt after 12 killed

Seems to be no end of it ...

    By Maria Antonova:

Kiev (AFP) - The shaky truce between pro-Russian rebels and the Ukrainian military was challenged Monday when 12 soldiers and civilians were reported killed in a surge of fighting across the separatist east.

A week after talks in the Belorussian capital Minsk yielded an agreement for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of heavy weapons and troops from the front line, a lasting solution to the conflict which has killed more than 3,200 people seemed no closer.

National Security and Defence Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko said rebels had killed nine soldiers over the last 24 hours. Some died in a rebel attack on an armoured vehicle carrying Ukrainian paratroopers.

Three civilians were killed in the main rebel stronghold of Donetsk, according to city hall.
