Default The Nostalgia thread - tell us your childhood memories

Moving on from the discussion we started in my Star Wars in the 70's thread (Here). We started discussing some of the things we did as a child. Click on to see where we started and feel free to join in.

As the original topic seemed to only included those born around the 70's, we'll move this to a separate thread were we can all discuss what entertained us as children. Konkers, books, spinning tops, hoops and sticks and Play station Portables... We want to know what kept you entertained as a child...

    Firstly it's Conkers!

Secondly, I doubt if there are many here who could relate to the 40s/50s childhood that I had and I doubt if many would be interested anyway.
How could people who were born into the electronic age imagine what it was like not to have any, nor even plastic?

I'm willing to tell anyone how we managed if they're interested, but only to specific and reasonable questions.

Surely that should be "it's" as in a contraction of "it is"

And spell it how you like, I still think it looks better with a 'K'

If you don't want to tell us because we can't relate, then that is also fine. But I'm not about to ask you questions; specific, reasonable or otherwise.

The thread is an open forum, and I'd prefer if you didn't post unless you 'wanted' to share. No one need feel obliged to post.

Don't get on your high horse with me yet, my contribution was valid!

I made a typo, so what?

Try google for Konkers, the reply is: "Did you mean: conkers?"

PS: When you're spelling is as good as mine you may point out typos.

    I recall my childhood fondly.

1978-1986 were my "cupboard years" though. Obviously.

    No konkers for me there.

Sorry if it came out "high horse-ish", I was going for more Pedantic.

But rest assured, I have a spell check that didn't like Konkers, but I'll be damned if I'm about to let it tell me how to spell. I'm a descriptivist rather than a prescriptivist when it comes to language. And if you insist on pointing out everyone else's typos, why shouldn't they do it back... Just my opinion, obviously.

And, in an attempt to steer this back on course (we are supposed to be discussing childhood, so I suppose it is appropriate) I'll tell you what I told my teachers back in school. "Dr Johnson can go to hell, and take his stupid book with him".

So stop the nonsense with typos?

Unless you'd like me to go back and point out all of yours? You may not have noticed that I mostly tend to point out errors when they change the meaning of something, and as Konkers don't exist except in your vocabulary and those who wish to copy you, I thought that it was reasonable to point out.

If you want to be a pedant, study the master first, bide your time, then when you feel confident to take my crown, make your move.

    Twatteller's the master. Fucking fruitcake!

I know what konkers are, its pretty obvious.

Back on topic, I don't believe you ever were a child.

If you have time on your hands to go back and find them all (as I sure there are many) please feel free. But don't feel you need to.

I was just going for pedantic as a means to rattle your cage, but I am in no way attempting to steal your crown as king of the pedants. And it was entirely reasonable to point it out, I just couldn't resist the typo when you were correcting me, hence the wink .

So in an attempt to put an end to this (and hopefully get us back on track) I will say I'm sorry for pointing out your typo. It was by no means an attack. Now give us a hug...

But hugs and kisses aside, I find I use a lot of words the English Language has been too slow to pick up on. For example (and here is where we steer the thread back) I use the word eskiskabobalis, now if you can google that I'd be amazed. It was a word we used to describe a friend of my back as a child.

Can Mr M* tell me what it means?
