Neurofibromatosis is one of the most common genetic disorders in the world today. It effects one in every 2,500 people, some more dramatically than others. The disorder, also known as Recklinghausen's Disease after the man who discovered it in 1882, may have been the cause of Joseph "The Elephant Man" Merrick's disfigurement. But some argue Merrick suffered from elephantiasis or Proteus syndrome, or a combination of two of these.
One thing's for sure, our old friend Huang Chuncai definitely suffers from this disorder, and so do many other ugly bleeders!
The disease is passed on genetically, but can also effect people with no family history through new gene mutations. The mutation causes benighn tumours to grow practically anywhere on the body, and can sometimes cause many multiple tumours or just a small number of very large ones. As yet there is no cure. Sci-Fi totty Gillian Anderson campaigns for a neurofibromatosis charity on account of her brother suffering from the condition.
