Scientists in South Korea say they have successfully cloned Turkish Angora cats with a special gene that makes them glow red under ultraviolet light.
Kong Il-Keun of Gyeongsang National University explains why he wanted to make glow-in-the-dark pussy. Since cats suffer some 250 genetic diseases that are similar to human diseases, the genetically-modified cats can be used to treat human genetic diseases. Due to the colour of the red fluorescent protein itself, the gene manipulation will also be useful to identify the functions of genes at each stage of the differentiation of embryonic or adult stem cells.
Three Turkish Angora cats were born in January and February through cloning and adding a gene that produces a red fluorescent protein that makes them glow in the dark. One died at birth, but the other two survived.
South Korea's scientific reputation recently suffered a heavy blow after much hailed stem cell breakthroughs by scientist Hwang Woo-suk were found to be faked in late 2005. He remains on trial on fraud and other charges.
It's not April fools day btw.
