    Default Pope condemns Atheism

Atheists behind the greatest cruelty, says Pope - Telegraph

Pope Benedict claims that atheism is behind the biggest forms of violations and cruelty. Claims of inability to live in a world that had created it's own injustice were proven by the trail of destruction left by Marxism.

His 76-page document, Spe Salvi, comes in the context of rising secularism in Europe and a spate of books attacking belief in God, including the "The God Delusion" by the Oxford academic Richard Dawkins.

In the document, the highest form of papal writing addressed to the whole Church, Benedict XVI said that many people rejected religious faith because they no longer found the prospect of an eternal after-life attractive.

Maybe the Pope should be concentrating on the people that DO believe in God.

You could argue that atheists have caused more deaths than religion if you consider the Nazi holocaust and the genocide in Soviet Russia. But all I can say to that is Communism and National Socialism are just as fanatical as religion, but more efficient.

Strictly speaking Buddhists are atheists. They are not really known for their cruelty.

I'm sure there is a name for the Pope's spurious argument "Cruel acts have been performed in the name of communists. Communists are Atheists. Atheists are Cruel."

He can say what he likes. It's his opinion.

    Nothing to do with me.

Thankfully we live in a world where there are no laws in the UK that say we have to believe or pretend to believe in God.

So my opinion of his opinion is...it's irrelevent. To atheists and has meaning to faithful Catholics. Never liked blind faith...worse when it where's a mask of apparent high intellect.

He says he reckons people are rejecting religious faith because they find the propsect of an eternal after life unattractive. I'm not sure I agree with that. For many it is blind faith, use of doctrines to solve problems and the fact that despite the so-called existence of a God there is still so much suffering in the World.

    Besides that.

    The correct term is sophistry.

It is also arguing from the particular to the general.

National Socialism isn't Christian, that was the cause that killed the Jews etc, not Hitlers personal request.

I'm not ready to argue factual history. Hitler was ultimately responsible for every action of the Nazis.
