The woman many dubbed the “Westlake cleaning fairy” said she should not have been arrested for cleaning an unlocked home, despite the fact the owners did not want her there.
Susan Warren, 53, was arrested and charged with burglary after she entered an unlocked Westlake home on May 22, cleaned it and left her phone number and a bill for her services on a napkin.
“I was just driving by, and I wanted something to do,” Warren said of stopping at the Dover Center Road home.
After spending several days in a Westlake prison, Warren said the owners of the home overreacted — she was just helping out, and trying to make a little money.
“It’s like what the (expletive) is wrong with you?” she said. “I’m cleaning your house for free.”
According to Westlake Capt. Guy Turner, Warren washed some coffee cups, took out the trash, vacuumed and dusted. The homeowner’s 19-year-old daughter was asleep at the time, but she said she thought her mother might have hired a cleaning service.
Warren said after entering the home, she called upstairs to see if anyone was home. She added that she runs a cleaning business, and, while most people know she is coming to clean, she has surprised other residents with visits.
“I’ve done it before,” Warren said. “I’ve left the bill, but these people got me arrested.”
Warren said the residents of the home called her to see if she had mistakenly cleaned the wrong home. She told them no, she does it “all the time” and asked that they pay her the $75.
Warren added that she has lost several jobs due to the economy, and she was “just trying to make some money.”
Warren’s sister, Linda Meldrum, said she believes Warren may be suffering from a mental illness due to her “unusual behavior” within the last year. Meldrum said the family has tried to have Warren evaluated after she broke into her brother’s residence to retrieve money he was holding for her.
“As a family, we are aware of what’s going on, and we are trying to get her mental health treatment,” she said.
Meldrum said Warren had numerous jobs and was working seven days a week, but she was recently fired from all of them.
“It’s so bizarre — she’s had some sort of a breakdown,” Meldrum said.
Warren said, however, that she and Meldrum do not get along, and she is not suffering from a mental illness as her sister claims. She said Meldrum does not like her and wants her to move out of the home she owns.
Warren said she just wants to move on with her life.
“I’ve lost two weeks of my life, and I’ve lost jobs over this,” she said.
