Western health authorities have tried using all kinds of graphic warnings to put people off smoking – including grotesque images of blackened lungs – yet millions choose to ignore them.

Now Indian campaigners believe they may have cracked the problem… by using a musical lighter that cautions tobacco lovers against sparking up with a death chant.

The electric lighter, which is fixed to the side of a street kiosk where - unlike in most countries - cigarettes are sold individually, blares out a Hindi funeral anthem each time the button is pressed.
