The bite was most likely from the Mediterranean Recluse spider(Loxoceles Rufescens) which are abundant throughout the Mediterrenean region of Europe, including France.

There's a Cambridge near/in Boston, which is where my sister-in-laws family are from, and Boston have a basketball team called the Celtics !
