Default If The Morningstarr* were a night club - it would be Mint Lounge!

Now I've been told about this night club on a number of occasions. Once even tried to go whilst on a night out, only to find the place shut - "sod it, let's go to FAB cafe". But there is something appealing about a night club advertised as "Manchester's only Burlesque bar - with a twist". This is a night club that openly targets an 'older' clientele, or customer who "appreciates the opportunity to experience a different kind of night - and to dress up a little." This sounds like my kind off night. "Get yer dancin' shoes, Love. We're goin' oot"

The tales I've heard about this place: snakes, fire-eaters, jugglers - all this and live music too. All we need now is alcohol... oh wait, what? Oh, they do that too, Excellent! The opportunity to finally go arose when the son-of-a-friend-of-Mrs-D's-dad ...[pause for breath]... got us tickets to see his band, Bluebird Kid Clark play and the lauch party of their new album Bottom Dollar. Finally, a chance to give this place a try.

Located on Oldham Road, in the Northern Quarter (for those of you who don't know Manchester, his is where the students with money go. The art town of Manchester) and located in the soemwhat cursed building that had once housed Planet K and Ascension, we're not exactly talking prime location. Advertising of the night club itself is limited to just an A4 printed flyer on the door. However, this is aided by the fire-juggler walking sentry outside.

Once in side it is almost impossible not to fall in love with the 'magician's parlour ' feel to the interior design. The bar lies to one side, all spirits and absinthe - they don't sell draught beers. Off in the distance, against the far wall, is the main stage, through a velvet curtained opening. We can see the shadowy outlines of people, groving to the band through the smoky-haze. The walls are decorated with prints of old movies. I'm expecting Bettie Page photos to be up there, but I didn't see any. someone has even scattered a deck of cards on the floor. Where's the top hat and dress gloves..? Or the rabbit for that matter..?

I've also decided that the best music is that which has never been heard before you heard them live. Bluebird Kid Clark, although not the kind of music I'd purchase and listen to, play a good live set. There is a mixture of good old-fashioned guitar rock, and soothing soul, with elements of dark country, like Johnny Cash. I know, comparisons to the 'Man in Black' is a little over the top with a more Oasis focused band, but there are definite influence there... Let's say Cash seems an influence in the way The Beatles were to Oasis.

And while this all goes on, two guys walk around letting you stroke their snakes... Let me rephrase that... Two guys walk around with albinoe python's around their necks - you could pet them if you liked.

The overall effect of this is fantatsic, and a night well worth a visit... If you're ever in Manchester, and see a guy juggling with fire, take the time to see what he's promoting.

If you'd like to hear more of Bluebird Kid Clark, here is the video to their song Sun in the Morning: -

Sounds interesting. I quite like the band as well - they remind me of someone else (it's gonna bug me now ).
