Clash of the Titans
The carcasses of two giant reptiles have been discovered in the Florida Everglades revealing the aftermath of a mighty battle for supremacy between the areas two largest carnivores.
An uncommon clash between a six-foot alligator and a thirteen-foot Burmese python left both combatants dead when the alligator, which was swallowed whole, burst through the python's stomach!
Two astounded rangers in the Everglades National Park discovered the remains of the two reptiles. The rangers say that the find suggests that the non-native python may one day eventually overtake the indigenous alligator as number one predator in the area.
Frank Mazzotti, a University of Florida wildlife professor was quoted by a local newsgroup as saying encounters such as this one rarely happen in the wild, this was one of only four known encounters between these two species.
The creatures are fairly evenly matched in size and providing the snake can get a good grip on the 'gator first there's a good chance it will win.
He added that the alligator must've still been alive when swallowed and clawing at the inside of the python's stomach wall would have caused it to burst open killing the python but failing to prevent it's own demise.
Similar events take place in South America where the native anaconda often dines on the local Cayman alligator. The anaconda being the world's largest snake easily outweighs the four-foot Caymans though.
