Default Theft suspect nabbed after picking off-duty cop's car

A tip for car burglars: break in at your own risk, as that car you're stealing from just might belong to a law-enforcement officer.

A convicted felon didn't follow that advice and ended up in jail in Fremont after a series of thefts from vehicles.

The incident began about 8 a.m. Monday when a resident on Dali Street reported to police that someone had stolen a laptop from his car. The victim checked the area and found a stereo and other abandoned property nearby.

As an officer was taking a report, another officer saw what appeared to an attack happening at a shopping center on the 35000 block of Fremont Boulevard. It turned out to be a confrontation between an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer and a man who had just broken into his car, said Fremont police Detective Bill Veteran.

The suspect, Daniel Kiehn, 25, was taken into custody. Police found the stolen laptop taken from the resident's car as well as stolen property taken from two other cars whose owners had not yet reported the thefts, police said.

Kiehn is a convicted felon who is on probation for burglary, Veteran said. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property and resisting arrest and is being held at Fremont City Jail in lieu of $12,500 bail.
