What a horribly stupid careless thing to do. I'm glad they're throwing the book at him but I also hope that they check out his mental state. Someone who has no regard for another persons safety or feelings and lack of insight as to what could have happened needs more than just punishing, they need to learn why it was wrong in the first place, they need to understand that and they need to care about that rather than just care about whether or not they themselves will get punished if caught.

I'd be seriously worried if someone, anyone at any age had so little regard for another living creature, in particular a helpless one .
