In a bid to cut the number of smokers in Brazil, the Brazilian government has made it law for every packet of cigarettes sold in the country to display one of these ten shocking images.

Death
Smoking can lead to death from lung cancer and emphysema



Gangrene
Smoking causes obstruction in the arteries and circulatory problems



Heart Attack
Smoking causes death from heart attacks



Impotence
Smoking causes sexual impotence



Infant Death
Smoking harms the mother and the baby and causes premature birth and death



Premature Aging
This product causes premature wrinkling



Stroke
Risk of stroke increases with the use of this product



Suffering
Nicotine dependence causes sadness, pain and death



Toxic Fumes
Breathing smoke from this product causes pneumonia and bronchitis



Toxic
This product contains toxic substances which lead to sickness and death

I find the campaign very patronising, using sensationalist photoshopped images that aren't a true representation of smoking.

Actually they haven't been working very well, the number of smokers in Brazil is rising. But that's probably due to Brazil producing tobacco and it's so cheap there.

It's funny though, their government is trying to stop Brazilians from supposedly dying in these horrible ways, but they don't think twice about exporting the tobacco abroad and letting us die of a stroke ripping our heads open, or babies ending up in ashtrays.

It doesn't matter what image they put on a cigarette packet, smokers will still smoke them. I'm well aware of the risks of smoking, so I don't need to be reminded every time I pick a packet up. If the images did end up causing me 'distress', I'd buy a holder to put them in before thinking about giving up.

The one and only thing that puts me on a guilt trip and will make me stop (very soon ) is my son. He's at an age where he keeps 'nagging' me not to smoke because he's worried about me dying - that's more of a deterrent to me then a photoshopped image on a packet of cigs.
