Well for starters the cat was killed to control stray populations, so it wasn't actually killed just for the stunt. The students didn't purposefully kill the cat just to prove a point.

I've recently become much more open minded about "blood sports". Hunting and killing animals is perfectly natural behaviour, and is done for many reasons. Sometimes quite callously but not always maliciously.
