Default Doctor Who's 2009 Gap Year

The Cult TV series Doctor Who will not be ending until 2010, but will take a gap year in 2009.
There will be three special episodes written by Russel T Davis during that year. Series 4 of Doctor Who will be broadcast next year on BBC One and will star Catherine Tate as The Doctor's new assistant.
A spokesman for the series was unable to comment wether David Tennent would be returning for series 5 in 2010.

Is it actually finishing after series five? I've read the story on the BBC site and it says about the gap year but doesn't seem to be saying that the fifth season will be the last.

The rumour I heard was that Tennant would leave after series 4, only having signed up for three series of the show (three being the average life of a Dr).

The other rumour, which perhaps relates to this, is that Russell T Davis would leave after the fifth series. It would then be passed on to someone else. I think this sounds the most logical, as Dr Who is fast pretty much one of the most popular shows the Beeb have at the moment.

Obviously, this gap year is rather suspicions. Rumour also has it though, that the next Dr has already been selected.

So who would you put up as the next Dr? I've been told, that the Beeb want a younger, up-and-coming actor, under 40, who will make women watch. I think that rules out anyone I'd pick... Personally, I'd like Eric Idle. Or maybe James Nesbitt, he was good in Jekyll. Whoever it is, they have to be able to pull of quirk and comedic, yet play it as if it was 'real'. What we don't want is another Berty Bassett monster. No thank you, Mr McCoy...

I'm never any good at picking actors for the doctor. I would probably never have picked Ecclestone or Tennant before hand - it's only afterwards that I have seen how good they were in the part.

Truth enough. I liked Eccleston beforehand, heck I loved him in some things, but I thought he was going to ruin it. At the time I was just pleased they were bringing it back... I didn't care who they got to do it. But he was "Excellent".

I thought Eccleston would be a hard act to follow, but David Tennant has really made the role his own. I'm even led to believe he won a pole as the best Doctor. Pipping Tom Baker to the post. Not sure I agree, but he is very good...
