Default How do you trace an IP address?

I'm wondering if anyone can help me out here?

I've suffered several attempted 'hackings' recently. In three instances, totally different accounts, I've been sent an automated email about it. In each case the IP address that tried to access the account/s was stated in the automated email and it is the same one. I've been away and just got back but these three (that I know about) seem to have happened in a very short space of time. I thought IP addresses rotated but this same IP comes up in each automated alert I received.

The IP concerned is : 86.129.148.15 . I've googled and discovered that it's a BT Central Plus account and appears to be based in London.

I'm not with BT Central Plus and I don't live in London!

I'm wondering if I can find out any other information about the holder of this IP somehow? A while back I had occasion to contact the police about a situation which arose and centered around weird emails I received about my children. Totally freaked me out and the police have taken it very seriously. I'll pass this IP on to them in case it's related but is there anything I can find out about it myself? I'm not particularly technically minded but I'm capable of googling on 'search IP' but that's about it.

    Any computer sleuths here?

    Thanks.

(I can post the entirity of the automated emails if that would be helpful?)

    View Whois works well.
ViewWhois.com - IP and Domain Whois

All i can tell you is that BT ip's change all the time and doesn't really give any info on where they live.

But if this one told you where it was, i know a few people who do live in the South and are on BT. I'm surprised it wasn't blueyonder going to sheffield.

Thanks. It just said London. Wasn't specific. Maybe that's just where the main IP thing is located?

Just tried WhoIs and all that says is BTCentralPlus together with something about RIPE and something about Amsterdam.

I tried on IP Ligence and there it also says BTCentral Plus but adds London, England as the location.

Hmm, looks my Sherlock days have come to a sudden end then! Presumably the police have different ways of accessing things and so might have more luck? I was hoping to beat them to it with a full dossier of information!

Don't people realise that when they try to hack you, you might get sent details of who they aren by the site they tried to hack? Or maybe they bank on the fact that you won't be able to find much out on your own?

    Not nice at all.

    Thanks though.

Contact your own ISP and see if they can help you. IPs can change if someone has a dynamic one but if they have a static one then it doesn't.

What is BT central? Is it possible to contact them and give them the IP? Hacking is a crime so they should do something about it.
    What a hoot!

Yes, they are indeed brainless dolts (LOVE that expression!)

It's just beginning to get to me and so I am handing everything over to the police because I'm fed up with it. I know some people will say 'hey, it's just the internet, who cares?' and mostly I'd agree with them but some things go beyond 'just being a laugh' and emailing me saying 'I know where you live and I've seen your children in the garden' etc. prompted me to go to the police a few weeks ago (just pointing out that I'm not overly paranoid but I won't stand for that sort of thing) and so now everything like this gets passed to them.

I'm now looking for a forum where I can have a jolly good rant!

Thanks though, your help is gratefully received.

That's freaky... what kind of weirdo sends you emails like that... I would give the information to the police. God knows what they have been trying to do with your computer.

Might be worth emailing BT as well because they will have records of who is using that connection at that time. From the link that Alpha gave: Please send abuse reports to abuse@btbroadband.com.
