I've got to be honest, however nasty people get, I'd still far rather only the police had access to specific information.
As Ck said, it protects the innocent or the victims of abuse.
The police seem to be able to get hold of it fast enough if they have any reason to.
I was more surprised that one forum initially thought they could 'bluff out' the police!

That really surprised me. I've run forums in the past and I can tell you that if I'd been contacted by the police involved in a criminal investigation, I would have handed over anything they wanted. But not everyone is either sane or sensible.
As I have said right from the beginning, I'm not a confrontational person and would normally let this sort of thing go, but once things start to get personally dangerous (and, in my case, once a completely innocent individual - not that I'm not innocent, but I mean someone who has never posted on any forum) starts to receive real life hassle then the ball game changes.
I have some more information on the person who REALLY suffered in this debacle, only because I asked the police if I could write to apologise that my internet life had inadvertently caused them problems. I wrote the letter and the police passed it on. I received a reply from someone connected with them and feel even worse now. The person they targetted was someone with a learning disability who really didn't understand what was happening and was very frightened by it.

Fortunately, they have people helping them and it was they who went to the police.
But it just goes to show how VERY dangerous some of this ridiculous behaviour can become.
I feel absolutely dreadful that someone, in that situation, received abuse as a result of someone's pathetic grudge against me.
