Microsoft today announced the next version of its Windows Phone operating system: Windows Phone 8. This version brings in some much needed improvements to the existing system, such as support for:

1) multiple core processors - up to now it has only supported single core;
2) different screen resolutions instead of just the one, which was starting to look a bit blurred on larger screen models;
3) micro SD cards to allow for increased storage;
4) Three different sizes of live tiles instead of just the current two, allowing for smaller tiles so you can fit more of them on the screen.

It remains to be seen if this will bring Windows Phone into the mainstream, but I think the improvements make what was already a nice OS into a very desirable one. The only problem is that owners of current Windows 7 phones will not get this upgrade, which could cause quite a few disappointed people.
