    Default First mobile phone.

I know nothing about phones so need some help. The time has finally come for my son to get one and I'm starting to fret because I don't know what to get him. He's been waiting for this day since he first asked for one nine years ago, so it can't be crap. It can't be too good either because I don't want him getting beaten up for his phone or anything.

I want a bit of a starter phone that isn't embarrassing for a twelve and a half year old, but I'll be wanting to replace it for something better for his thirteenth birthday in six months time.

I can't really advise as regards what model of phone to get, although I would say an iPhone is out from reading your requirements. There is always the old 3GS iPhone, which at least is a few years old now, so will be cheaper and less desirable for thieves. I would imagine you are looking at the lower end though, but I'm not sure of the models at that end of the scale.

Yeah, I don't think I want to get him an iphone just yet. I hopefully want to get him something special for his birthday, so that's maybe the kind of thing I'll be wanting then though.

My husband's getting rid of his old phone (it's a Samsung Wave), but I don't really want to give him a second hand phone as his first phone.

The only things I can think of are the Nokia Lumia 800, which is a Windows phone, or the HTC One V, which is the low end HTC Android phone, but I've got no idea how suitable these would be for him. They are both good phones though.

Any kind of Android phone would probably be okay, most thieving kids are after iphones of any type.

And get the lad's dad to show him how to defend himself.

Start off with a stick, with a bit of dog poo on the end.

That's for the self defence, for the phone tin cans and string are good starter.

I put that in the search. Without having a look around, I think that's a bit too expensive for now. Over €500?
    Nokia Lumia 800

He might not even use it, that's why I want a starter phone to see how much use it gets.

That's without a contract. I presume he will be going pay as you go then?

Yeah, I think it's safer with him only being twelve.
