My latest hardback Terry Pratchett is priced at £18.99 on the inside cover but I got it for £8.99 from Amazon. The average paperback, which comes out about a year after the hardback is priced at about £6.99 but is often marked down to about £5 in the supermarkets and then even less after a while.

My husband has been talking the Kindles up because he would like to get me one. It's not unusual for me to read 3 books at one time. I'm just not sure I would like it. So...he found some software with a free download and put it on his laptop. We have the option of "borrowing" digital books from the library. By doing this, I get to test out the idea of the Kindle. Unfortunately, being that it's on his laptop, I have yet to test it out and it's been a month. Perhaps I should buy him a Kindle instead.

No, I mean the E books. If I want English books I have to pay extra in France, so I was wondering if it'd work out cheaper to get one of these instead.

They range from free to around £10 or £11.Most are around the £5 mark though. It depends what you want to read as well. The newer books tend to be dearer but older ones are quite reasonable. The OH got "Fear the Worst" for £2.87 the other day, and I got two Bill Bryson books for £6, if that's any help.

@timey , I'm assuming you've still got the kindle with the keyboard on the bottom and not the newer one? I don't really know what difference it'll make with me not knowing how either works, but which in your opinion would be best? Also, do you ever read magazines and newspapers on it, or do you prefer the real thing? I'm thinking of getting one as a birthday present, but I'm not sure whether this person reads enough books or whether they only read on holiday. I know I should think of something more fitting, but they do read newspapers.

No I've got the one without the keyboard now and the OH has the old one. It's great as it is nice and neat and you hardly ever need to use the keyboard anyway. I don't read mags or newspapers on it generally as I find it best for books.

Ok, had to cut it short last night as the signal kept fading out. Yeah, I use mine mainly for books. I don't read newspapers and the only mag I read is BBC Focus, which I get as a printed copy but as part of the sub I get to download it to my iPad, which is better for viewing images and stuff that you get in a mag. The Kindle is great for travelling though, as you can take all the books you are likely to read in one very light and compact device. When we were away we saw a lot more people with Kindles than you ever used to. Anyway, I hope that helps and if you need any more help just give me a shout.

    Cheers, Timey.

Another thing, which do you prefer, reading on your ipad or on your kindle if you're at home? It's the lack of colour that I'm not sure of with him not necessarily reading many books. I googled Kindle and colour and noticed a new kindle fire that's out, but I think it's more ipad like, so I'm maybe swaying towards something more like that now. That's only available in America at the moment, so I don't know whether it'd work in England though. I know someone in America who could get me one if I wanted one, so that wouldn't be a problem, it's just it'd be no good if it couldn't be used in England.
