US F1 have applied to world motorsport's governing body, the FIA, to defer their entry into the Formula 1 world championship for 12 months.
The team, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, is among four newcomers entered for the 2010 season.
Team principal Ken Anderson told BBC Sport: "If the FIA say no (to the deferral) we are done. If they say yes we can put it back in gear and go."
The FIA said on Wednesday US F1 would have to reapply for entry in 2011.

Here's some bits about this season:
With a maximum of 26 cars on the grid this year (up from 20), a new points system has been introduced. First place will receive 25 points, with 18 for second and 15 for third. The next seven finishers will score 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 point respectively.
Refuelling the cars during the race will no longer be allowed, and this is sure to have a major effect on strategy.
South Korea makes it's debut in the Formula One calender with a grand prix at the newly-built circuit in Yeongam.
Plans to switch the British Grand Prix to Donington Park in 2010 fell through, and the race will continue at Silverstone on a modified circuit that has lengthened the track to 760m.
The often eventful Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve after a one-year absence.

Thanks for that info Alpha. Good to see Canada back in the fray, but 26 cars! Jings, I thought 22 was a lot. The no refuelling thing should be interesting and of course Schumi is back.

Felipe Massa got 2nd while Lewis Hamilton came in 3rd.
Michael Schumacher came in 6th.
