If you go and visit Spain, France, Ireland or Germany, you have to pay premiums to use their state healthcare!

You should really have travel insurance anyway.

Yes, the EHIC is no substitute for proper travel insurance.

Yeah, I think some people assume you get the same cover as you do in the UK. You only get the cover that people in that country would get and it's usually nowhere near as much as you get in the UK. In France you'd still be paying 30% of anything that wasn't an emergency.

What would you get if it was an emergency?

Also, people forget about other costs such as repatriation, which can be huge.

In France? You'd get the full amount there, I think that's probably the case in all of Europe.

That's the thing, it can cost a fortune but people don't always think about that. If you ended up in hospital needing something doing that wasn't life threatening, so not an emergency, you'd end up having to pay for it yourself if you couldn't risk flying before getting it done.

It's actually quite ironic, that after Scotland voted not to leave the UK, it might be effectively forced out by the English if they vote to leave the EU, because let's face it, that's who's going to decide the issue. And I'm getting the feeling from what I see and hear, that the sentiment is rather going that way.

I'm not sure what's going to happen. I really can't see how they could leave the EU without any repercussions, it's just not as easy as people think. I'd be shocked if it did happen to be honest, it's not just the Europeans in the UK that would end up in limbo, there's a huge amount of British people outside of the UK as well that would find themselves in limbo too. Are we supposed to just swap back?

I can still vote, but I'm not registered to vote and doubt I'd sort it in time so I won't be voting.

How do you mean, swap back?

I think it is doable. Of course there will be a lot of red tape to sort out, such as all the laws etc that have been passed by Europe over the past 43 years. But at the same time it's not like Scotland and the UK where the economies are tied up in one entity. The economies of the EU countries are still separate entities even if they follow EU rules on taxes and stuff. But it would be a lot of work all the same and would be quite costly, something that the leavers haven't been fully questioned on yet. I am in favour of staying in though as I believe that we do get a lot more out of it than people think, and the costs are pretty low compared to other things like the NHS and the benefits system.

We'd lose our right to freely live and work around Europe. I've got no idea how it works in the UK, but here I don't have permanent residency and can't apply until I've been here for five years, so really we could be asked to leave. I had it in France, but not here. I doubt very much it'll change for the people already living in other countries, including the UK, but nobody knows.

I know when France tried to change their 'free' healthcare, they managed to change it and people who'd not lived there for five years had to get private healthcare. I'm sure they'd put some time of timescale on permanent residency if the UK did vote to leave.
