A village in west London is being turned into a “transit camp” for asylum seekers who are being temporarily housed there on their arrival into the UK, say residents.
Longford in Hillingdon is receiving coach loads of refugees each day, who are understood to be arriving from the main refugee camp in Calais.
They are living in houses which were bought up by hotel owners after property prices in the village fell and the rooms are being rented out to the Home Office to house asylum seekers.
The crisis, which is leaving residents “feeling overwhelmed”, was explored in BBC’s Inside Out London which aired last night.
85-year-old Ray has lived in the village for 50 years but said the character of the area was changing because of the increase in refugee arrivals.
