    Default Are forums dying out?

Most forums I look at are a lot quieter than they used to be, not just here, are they dying out but some people are just holding on to them? The only ones that are a bit more active and the ones specialising in something, but even those are quiet nowadays. It's hard having a discussion with just a couple of people, I try but I do wonder how long before they die out completely and even I move away from them.

I missed the chat rooms era, but I think they died out a bit and forums took their place because they're not as intrusive. I did try them once when I was off sick from work, I'd heard you could talk to people all over the world about all sorts, but I couldn't get further than people saying ASL, which I didn't have a clue what it meant back then, then asking the colour of my pubic hair. I spent an hour trying chat rooms, then never tried again.

Facebook and similar seem to be the in thing at the moment, but they're not forums. I'm not into everybody, including my family, knowing all my random thoughts so I only post photos. You can't really post a long bit of random crap, like I'm doing now, it's all just one liners and I'm not a one liner kinda person.

I'd really miss the few people that are still sticking around here if the forum died, so that's why I keep coming even if there's no posts. It won't be the same if I have to move more over to Facebook, we'll all just drift off. I can't see me messaging Camb to ask what he's had for his dinner, messaging Jules when I want to discuss the colour of toilet paper, or messaging Timey a photo of my dinner just to stay in touch. I can see that would probably be the quickest way of getting blocked because it only works on a forum.

It has got really quiet here

I think a lot were scared off by petty disagreements

I'll still keep coming here unless something strange happens, like I get a life

If you disappear I'll stalk you on fb

    Thanks, Jules. I think.

It is a shame that a lot of people left, I do still miss a few of them but I know people move on.

I'm not sure that's a good enough excuse, Camb. I've worked really long hours before, but did you ever notice my absence? I mean Nic was on here posting within a couple of hours of giving birth, she didn't let a little thing like labour get in the way either.

Facebook's all one liners? Have you seen some of Nic's posts?

(BTW, what DOES ASL mean? )

But yeah, Facebook is the thing nowadays, and Twitter for some, but I still feel that forums have a place, or at least this one does but it's kinda special really. I will keep posting here too and it's kind of handy when, as Breezy says, you don't want all your family or whatever to see everything that you are saying online. Luckily, not many of my family are on there, and my parents wouldn't have a clue what people were talking about anyway.

Age, sex, location. Did you never bother with chat rooms either?

I didn't like them, I only used one that one time. I got laughed at for asking what they were talking about because I couldn't understand all the code and then people started calling me a virgin so I logged off. I didn't want to admit defeat so I logged on an hour or so later hoping it'd be new people, but they were all the same people and I just couldn't get any kind of conversation going. I'm not sure what kind of chat room I'd gone in, I probably didn't know they were different types, but they weren't into the same kind of chat as me.

Nope, never done chat rooms. Do you remember chat lines? I remember calling one back in the 1980s to see what it was all about and it was crap. There was no conversation, just people babbling a load of nonsense and one bloke just said "bollocks" all the time. God knows what people got out of it.

Yeah, as kids we used to pile into the phone box to call them. We never paid, there was always somebody about who could make it so that your ten pence kept dropping back out but you'd get the call credit.

To be honest I don't remember ever getting as far as talking, you could just hear a load of people shouting stuff. I was underage, so you'd always get someone coming on within no time to check your age and then you'd get cut off.

Thanks for that, Ern! It's always something I've wondered, but didn't like to ask.
