    Creature Garden Project: Mini-Pond

I've got a patch of garden next to one of the sheds that has a lovely corkscrew hazel that I hang bird feeders from. Beneath it is pretty wild, and I've been meaning to install a small pond/birdbath for some time now.

Today I went off and bought a shiny new spade and dug a hole to place an old water feature we no longer use into the ground. It's only about 80cm in diameter, but I'm hoping the birds will appreciate it, and some young frogs.

I put a layer of earth at the bottom of the pond, and built up around the edges with some rocks and pebbles, so it's easy for critters to get in and out. The soil I removed is in a pile amongst the tall grass, so there'll be insects and creepy-crawlies living in it. I put a small stack of pebbles nearby too, for little creatures to hide in.

I tipped water in straight from our main pond, so it's already full of little organisms. I resisted the urge to tip any tadpoles in, just in case. Currently it looks a lot like a muddy puddle, but once it all settles I hope it'll look a bit better. I'll keep you posted if any frogs move in.

What's the reason for the mud inside? Is it just because the pot was too deep, or does it do something?

It's for plants to grow in and little creatures to live in.

Well the new pond is officially a pond, and not just a puddle.

I'm very happy with my mini-pond.

When I made it I assumed it would be the tiny frogletts that made their way to it, but this year there's been an adult frog in it every day. It's clearly a good spot for the frogs to live. There's lots of cover nearby, and I just made a bug hotel from a piece of the ash tree we had cut back the other week, so there'll be plenty of grub for them.

There is a 'frog house' I bought right next to it now, but that seems to be a 'mouse house' now.
