The Morningstarr* London trip May 2015

So we went to London last weekend to see Nick Cave in concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Always quite fancied seeing a gig at the Royal Albert so we thought we'd make a bit of a trip of it.

CK organised the travel arrangements and hotel/apartment so we traveled down first class on the train at a bargain price, and stopped in a swanky apartment in Bishopsgate, just round the corner from Liverpool St Station.

When we were in London last September to see Kate's Bush I spotted a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co Restaurant in Piccadilly Circus, but it was a week prior to it opening so we couldn't go in.

So I'd been looking forward to getting the chance to try it out. We'd been to a Bubba Gump's in Cancun when we were out there and really quite enjoyed it, this one was practically identical. We kicked off with spicy Cajun shrimps to share, then CK had the coconut shrimp and I had the Cajun chicken sandwich. We had a couple of cocktails too, and you get to take the glass home with you.

It is a bit of a cheesy themed and overpriced place, but it's still very tasty and enjoyable.

That was it for Saturday night. The next morning we got up and went for a walk around Spitalfields, where there is a few markets and lots of nice places to eat. I realised we were very close to Brick Lane so we headed over there to try the Cereal Killer Cafe.

I think we made a bit of a pig's ear of it to be honest. The place is tiny, and it was hammered. The menu was a large whiteboard with loads on it in very small writing, so I gave up trying to read that as I reached the counter and just looked for a box of cereal which looked nice to try. We eventually ordered some 'cinnamon toast crunch' and 'reeces puffs', because they're American and exotic. The bloke serving poured both cereals in one bowl, when I told him we wanted a bowl of each cereal he looked at us like we were mental. We just had regular milk and didn't bother with any toppings. It would seem we wasted the opportunity, the done thing is to mix loads of different cereals together and have strawberry fucking milk, or something, and cover the cereal in marshmallows or fruit or M&Ms.

    Glad we went though.

Brick Lane was pretty cool, they had load of street vendors selling food from all around the world, Chinese, Indian, Mexican, even Ethiopian. If it had been a little later in the day I would've tucked into some of that.

We even spotted a pair of proper cockneys.

We left Brick Lane and headed towards Hackney to visit the Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities. On the way we passed Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium, I did want to pop in there but sadly it was bookings only.

After the mad museum we headed back to Spitalfields and had lunch in a restaurant chain called Giraffe. Pretty good, but slow service because it was so busy. I nearly bought myself some beard oil at Spitalfields Old Market, but took his website address instead for future purchases.

That afternoon we headed to Kensington to see Nick Cave. Before going to the gig we had a quick nosey outside Kensington Palace, and then ate at My Old Dutch pancake house. There's two or three of these in London, and as good as it was it didn't beat the old Dutch Pancake House in Manchester. I was really quite full after finishing my stack of butterscotch pancakes with bacon and eggs.

CK also had bacon and maple syrup on her pancake.

After pancakes we went to the concert, and the Royal Albert Hall is as grand as they say. We were right up at the very fucking back, which meant we got a good view around the auditorium. The sound was good too.

The following day we wanted to do some traditional tourist type things, so we headed off to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. I nearly got into a punch-up with a fucking tramp, and contemplated throwing him into the fucking Thames, but didn't actually want to touch the piss-stinking drunken rotter.

Tower of London was quite dull, I recall finding it boring when I was eight, and it was still a bit boring now. They really need to sex it up with more stories of executions, torture, and violence. And they only had about half a dozen ravens, which I didn't get to pet.

Tower Bridge has got one of those scary glass floors. Probably worth it for nine quid.

After the Towers we got back on the tubes and headed for Chinatown. We went to the London Chinatown Restaurant which we've been in before. It's very good value, and their beer is always very cold.

After that we headed back to the apartment and rested up for the evening meal. We found a place on Google which was a former brothel in Soho and was now a hip and happening trendy eatery.

Blacklock specialise in meat chops. Beef, pork and lamb chops, and if you order the 'all in' like we did you get to try 'em all.

It was a mistake having dinner at Chinatown, stuffing myself with crispy duck and chili beef, and then having the 'all in' at Blacklock, I nearly burst.

We were served that great big pile of meat chops, two beef rib, two pork belly, two lamb T-bone and two lamb chops. It was delicious. we also went through the list of cheap cocktails, not knowing what they were. When they arrived I had the one in the more masculine glass.

All the food looks and sounds great. That's the best thing about the likes of London, the sheer choice that is available - nothing like that up here. Those pancakes looked particularly nice with the bacon and maple syrup. Hoping to have some of that sort of thing when we are in Canada.

Looked like a good weekend, you fat knacker

I went to London in November but as usual I was completely disorganised. I need to do a bit of research first before I go again

I did see the poppies at the Tower though, very impressive, especially when they started reading the names of the fallen as it started getting dark

Isn't Brick Lane the epicentre of twattery? I was told it's full of ironic hipster types

    What's wrong with hipsters?

Brick Lane is full of Bangladeshis, that's why that twat nail-bombed it. They are hipsters who run that cereal cafe though.

Nowt - I like the vegan, organic, ethnically sourced, my shirt looks like I found it in a skip but cost me 350, looking at everyone else with derision, I made this table from a pallet I found you can buy it for 500, I only drink coffee that's been through the digestive system of an Asian palm civet, I drink my beer from a jam jar buggers

They were hipsters that ran that chop-house. So I doubt they were vegans.
