A husband has thanked Star readers for helping to find his Thai wife, Som Porn.

Derek Eastham, aged 58, was concerned about the wellbeing of his wife of ten years after he lost contact with her about 18 months ago.

Soon after an appeal in The Star to find Som Porn, he received a phone call confirming she was safe and well.

Derek came to Sheffield from Hackney in London last Thursday as he believed his wife had links to South Yorkshire.

He said: “I hadn’t even got back to London before my phone was ringing.

“I heard from her daughter, who now lives in Mansfield, and I have now spoken to my wife.

“She is fine and that’s brilliant. She is in the UK and we will possibly have a meet-up in a week or so.”

Derek, a bus advertising fixer, first visited Thailand in 1999 and met Som Porn.

He visited her twice a year until they eventually obtained a visa for her to come to the UK.

Som Porn joined Derek in the UK in 2004 and the couple got married.

He said: “She was three years in this country and then we moved out to Thailand in 2007. Out there, things didn’t go at all how we had planned.”

In 2010, Derek came home and Som Porn went to India for six months to work. When she returned to Thailand the couple remained in touch and they discussed her going back to the UK.

But one day, he rang her phone and somebody else answered it.

Derek said: “I didn’t know whether she is dead or alive.

“I went to Thailand to try and find some people she used to visit and that drew a blank.”

Derek came to Sheffield as he believed Som Porn’s daughter from a previous relationship was married to a Sheffield man.

He said he was delighted when the daughter called him.

“Even is it had just been a call from her daughter to say she was fine, I would have been quite happy with that,” he said.

“It’s all good stuff.”
