    Default Malta

We only had a brief visit, but after just two and a half days I'm totally in love with the place. I had in my head a dirty overpopulated island with run down buildings, no green anywhere and mad drivers beeping their horns all over the island. It's just nothing like that at all. It's mainly marble and sandstone everywhere, but it's only built up on some of the coast, especially Sliema and St Julian, but there's still lots of coastline untouched and so stunning you find yourself gaping at it. It's like you're standing in a painting, it's just so beautiful that it seems unreal.

I don't remember the names of places, but this is sorta around St Pauls bay. It could even be it, I just don't remember because we saw the whole of the coast from Sliema to the top northern part.

... then even further along the coast.

This is further round still, but higher up with St Pauls in the background. It's definitely not all concrete as you can see from the photo. To me this photo shows the kind of scenery that I absolutely love and used to have in France, but not quite as stunning. I could've spent all day just walking along there. The good thing is this picture is ten minutes drive from where we'll be living, so I'll be back with a picnic to check more of it out, only in flats not heeled boots.

I just kept looking saying 'I can't believe this is real, it's just so perfect'. It's got lots of hiking areas and so much natural beauty both on the coast and more inland. On Sunday we drove from St Julian's to the north tip of the island to get a better feel of the place.

There's loads of history, but I need to research it all before going to look at stuff so that I know what I'm looking at. I took a photo of this place though, I think it has some story to tell about WW11, so I'll be back when I know what I'm looking at.

... and this was on the way down. I don't know anything about it, I just like the look of it.

On our way up to the tip we saw quite a few people hiking to the top, or sleeping in their cars at the top, waiting to watch the sun set near Gozo (the other Maltese island). It's just such a lovely atmosphere because to make the effort to go that high up means you're wanting to see what you're seeing, so everyone looks very happy and smiling at each other.

This is at the northern tip, looking over at Gozo. You can see the ferries in the background.

... and this is a bit higher up with the ferry terminal in the bottom right.

This is on the way down. The roads were dead, but I expect the main tourist months might change that. I'll still be able to go up there in winter if it is too busy though.

This is Spinola bay, along one of the most populated areas near St Julians. It's a statue that reflects love into the water only when it's calm. It wasn't calm enough for me, but this is just fifteen minutes walk from where we'll be living, so I will get a photo of it at some point.

    IMG 0641 zpsdeae9f53 - Malta

Here's some more photos of the area we'll be living. It's Sliema, just 15 minutes walk from where we'll live.

    This is one direction...

    IMG 0552 zps93c21682 - Malta

.. and this it the other. It's strange to see water at the front and back of you.

    IMG 0553 zps405911dc - Malta

And this is also Sliema, with the capital Valetta in the background. We didn't get to go there, but it's carnival the week we get there so we plan to go then.

It's absolutely beautiful and all I used to love about France but massively more and that's just the scenery, the people are the friendliest I've ever met and the variety of food gets me so excited after living in France with very little choice. It's got lots of influences from Europe, including the UK, Italy, Turkey, so you can get fish and chips, pizza and pasta and kebabs without it looking like streets meant only for tourists. It's not got that brits abroad feeling or anything like that, the British food just mingles in with everything else to make it all Maltese food.

It was just so perfect in every way that I just can't understand why everybody doesn't want to live there. I can't wait to be back.

I take it you realise, @A_B, that in Malta you are more likely to end up with certain visitors as it is much more accessible to us than France?

Nope. Think about it Jules, how do we get to a remote part of the south of France from up here, compared to getting to Malta, an island that specialises in package holidays. It's not distance that is the problem.

Oh I forgot to mention. Malta airport is the best airport I've ever seen. Plus you know you're onto a good thing when you get off the plane, walk over to the food court and have the best KFC you've ever tasted. It might not sound much, but France can't do KFC and have no variety, extras, or even boxes, a lot of the time they don't even have chicken, so it was a proper treat because we miss stuff like that. We like to go to KFC here just so we can moan about the food and swear we'll never be back, but the one at Malta was delicious.

You can't get any sides around here and popcorn chicken doesn't exist either.

The thought of KFC makes me a bit gippy

The pizza did look good though

    What's the local food like?
