2 New Exoplanets More Like Earth Than Any Others : Discovery News

Astronomers have found eight more worlds properly situated from their parent stars for liquid surface water, a condition which, at least on Earth, is believed to be key for life to evolve.

The newly found planets include two that are more similar to Earth than any other exoplanets found to date, astronomers said.

I think he is wrong. There will be life out there somewhere as there are sheer billions of galaxies each with billions of stars. He also says that the spark that created life on Earth in the first place is extremely unusual. How can he know that?

I tend to think that the Mail have quoted him out of context, or completely got it arse about face because they're so fucking dim.

For all those who are not familiar with the concept of Exoplanets, an exoplanet is a planet that lies outside the solar system, and could be a free-floating planet, or one that orbits another star. The discovery of exoplanets has always been a subject of great fascination, and starting with first discovery of their existence made by Bruce Campbell and Stephenson Yang using the Hale Telescope in 1992, the study and observation of these plants has achieved massive levels of technological advancement.

Now that exoplanet-hunting is a mainstream part of astronomy, the race is on to build instruments that can find more and more planets, especially worlds that could be like our own.

The French CoRoT mission, launched in 2006, was the first dedicated exoplanet space mission, searching for planets that pass in front of their host stars. It has contributed dozens of confirmed exoplanets to the ranks and boasts a roster of some of the most well-studied planets outside our solar system.

NASA's first exoplanet mission, Kepler, launched in 2009, and has revolutionized how astronomers understand the universe and our place in it. Among its many discoveries, Kepler has found that small planets are likely to be the most common in the galaxy, and that our sun is an unusually calm star. Kepler has found exotic, multi-planet solar systems and Hot Jupiters of incredibly low density. As it continues its mission, it's likely that Kepler will find planets the size of our own, possibly within the habitable zones of their stars.

Kepler may be NASA's first exoplanet mission, but it certainly won't be the last. Multiple technology initiatives at NASA are working on better ways to detect, characterize, and even directly image exoplanets, while searching for habitable worlds close to our own solar system.
