Default Malta - has anybody been?

I don't know a single person who's been to Malta. I've got one friend that's going there on holiday next summer, but that's it.

Has anybody ever been and can tell me anything about it?

Yay, I've been there three times.

IMO best to stay in Bugibba/St. Paul's and head to Valletta on the bus or hire bicycles/car. Buses tend to be good but last time I was there the drivers were on strike! Bike hire could be a good idea. Seems to be lots of rocks and stones everywhere but maybe coz the Eyeties & Jerries bombed the crap out of it in WWII. There was a nice small bar called Coconut Creek in St. Paul's last time but that was about ten years ago.

Did it look dirty or anything when you went, Camb?

I'm not sure. It's all a bit scary at the moment and doesn't feel real. I booked some flights earlier to go and have a look in January, so nothing is confirmed yet.

No, it has been fine when I was there. Dirt certainly is not something that stands out in my memories.

IMO it is generally anglophilic, chilled-out and has some interesting history both militarily and otherwise. The currency is I think the Maltese Lira but it was often called the pound if I recall correctly.

Oh yeah there were (are?) some people who catch and kill birds with big nets and by shooting (don't be surprised to hear shotguns going off!). I was appalled by this back then as I was vegetarian at the time.. .. lol.

Oh that's good, thanks Camb. I read that there's a lot of rubbish but it's improved. If you didn't notice it ten years ago I can't see it being a massive problem now. I think the bird thing still goes on and is causing problems. You're behind with the currency though, it's the euro now.

Everything is so scary because it's totally unknown and a bit risky, but some of the food looks nice so that's driving me on.

I read that it's illegal to divorce there as well, so my husband seemed happy that I won't be able to keep threatening him with it anymore.

It's got an interesting mix of an African/European/Middle-eastern feel about it, which is unsurprising considering the geography and gives unique character. I liked visiting Valletta and the north/northeast coastline is best I think but I only went to the other side of the island briefly on a few occasions.

It might have been 'dirty' ten years ago but I didn't notice!

We'd be looking to be a bit further north of Valletta in either Sliema or towards St Julians and back a bit at swieqi, but not up as far as St. Paul's. I've done loads of research, but until I see it in the flesh I don't know whether it'll be too crowed for us at those coastal places though.

It's very religious, so it could be. Have you been?

Yeah I worked out there, in the 90s, for a couple of weeks.

I was out with a mixed bag of folk, but one was black another gay and both had a hard time in some of the bars we hit.

Never been in a rush to go back
