    UFO ESA satellite pictures

Space in Images - 2014 - 10 - Egmont National Park, New Zealand

Egmont National Park on New Zealand’s North Island is pictured in this satellite image.

National parks protect forested areas from human activities that cause land degradation and deforestation. The boundary between protected and non-protected areas is often very clear in satellite images –as we see here between the green, densely forested area and surrounding agricultural landscape.

The land here was first formally protected in 1881, within a 9.6 km radius of the mountain summit.

According to Māori mythology, Taranaki used to reside over 100 km further east near other large volcanoes when a fight broke out over the female Mount Pihanga. Taranaki lost and fled west, carving the gorges of the Whanganui River along the way before stopping. When the mountain peak is covered by clouds and mist, it is believed that Taranaki is weeping for Pihanga.

    UFO Tropical thaw

Quelccaya ice cap Peru node full image 2 - ESA satellite pictures

This image features Peru’s Quelccaya ice cap, the largest in the Tropics.

Resting high up in the Cordillera Orientalof the Peruvian Andes, the ice cap has been shrinking due to rising temperatures in the region, losing over 20% of its area since the 1970s.

Downstream communities rely on this water source for drinking and electricity in this dry region, but some estimates show that the ice cap will vanish in a matter of decades, draining the water supply for millions of people.

In the far upper-left corner of the image, we can see the Qori Kalis Glacier, the ice cap’s main outlet. This glacier is retreating – and this retreat has accelerated in recent years – losing about 50% of its total length since the 1960s.

As a result of the glacier’s melting, a lake began to form in late 1980s and has grown over the years.

Other smaller lakes have also formed around the ice cap. Meltwater lakes are generally lighter in colour through the presence of fine particles produced by the grinding of the ice over bedrock – called ‘rock flour’. When this ‘flour’ turns the water white or cloudy, it is referred to as ‘glacial milk’.

The false-colour of this image makes vegetation appear bright red, and we can clearly see how vegetation grows mainly in the valleys and along the paths of water runoff.

I remember seeing Taranaki from the plane as we flew into Wellington. It was a fair distance away but you could see the cone peeking out above the clouds.

Flew out to South Africa many years ago in 1981 - on my seventh birthday I could see Mt Kenya and Mt Kilimanjaro out of the window of our 747 as we headed south over Africa. It was ace.

    UFO Volcano Watch

Proba V images Indonesian volcano node full image 2 - ESA satellite pictures

    Space in Images - 2014 - 12 - Proba-V images Indonesian volcano

ESA's Proba-V minisatellite catches the Sangeang Api volcano on the island of Sangeang in Indonesia as a thick column of ash and sulphur dioxide pumps into the atmosphere. The dense ash grounded flights across much of the archipelago nation. This 300 m-resolution image was acquired on 31 May.

Launched in 2013, Proba-V is a miniaturised ESA satellite tasked with a full-scale mission: to map land cover and vegetation growth across the entire planet every two days.

Mexico City subsidence node full image 2 - ESA satellite pictures

Five Sentinel-1A radar scans acquired between 3 October and 2 December 2014 were combined to create this image of ground deformation in Mexico City. The deformation is caused by ground water extraction, with some areas of the city subsiding at up to 2.5 cm/month (red).
