UFO ESA satellite picture - Sentinel-1A

    Beijing, China.

Beijing China node full image 2 - ESA satellite pictures

This image from the Sentinel-1A satellite shows the capital of the People’s Republic of China, Beijing. It is one of the most populous cities in the world with over 21 million people, but during the Chinese new year or ‘Spring Festival’, millions travel from the big cities back to their hometowns to spend the holiday with their families in what is considered the world’s largest annual migration.

This image is a compilation of three scans by Sentinel-1A’s radar from 8 October, 13 November and 31 December 2014.

    UFO Proba-V dragons

Proba V views Drakensberg mountains node full image 2 - ESA satellite pictures

Drakensberg mountain range – Afrikaans for ‘Dragon mountains’ – viewed by ESA’s Proba-V minisatellite.

The range sits in southern Africa and extends from northeast to southwest for around 1125 km. This 100 m-resolution image centres on uKhahlamba–Drakensberg Park, located at Lesotho’s northeastern border with the South African province of Kwasulu-Natal, covering roughly 240 000 hectares. Lesotho’s Malibamats’o River is visible to the upper left.

Rich in its diversity of habitats, the park is home to various populations of endemic birds, mammals and reptiles. It is also home to the largest collection of rock paintings in Africa south of the Sahara. The paintings reflect the way of life of the San people, which lived in the area for more than four millennia. In 2000, UNESCO named the park as a World Heritage Site.

    UFO Proba-V

Proba V detecting aircraft node full image 2 - ESA satellite pictures

As ESA’s Proba-V works quietly on its main task of monitoring vegetation growth across Earth, the minisatellite is also picking up something from a little higher: signals from thousands of aircraft.

Launched two years ago today, Proba-V has picked up upwards of 25 million positions from more than 15 000 separate aircraft.
