Default Supporting the Kurds in Iraq and Syria

In my opinion, Kurdish forces in northern Iraq should be supported in whatever ways they require as they represent the only viable opposition to I. S. on the ground. They seem to be very well organised and well motivated but could do with more help to destroy the evil Islamists.

Special Forces (working directly with the Kurds) on the ground, plus air support (sorties from bases in Turkey) including accurate bombing should be employed. Satellite imaging can and should be used to find I. S. targets or confirm those spotted from ground positions.

Air support is proven to be effective: U. S. bombing has already helped the Peshmerga re-take Mount Zartak, which overlooks a plain that stretches to Mosul, the city seized by I. S. in June.

BBC News - Iraq crisis: Kurds retake strategic mountain from IS

Nearer Baghdad, further to the south, there are elements of the Iraqi Army as well as large numbers of Shia militia, so no need to go near there! But the Kurds should receive assistance and hopefully the I. S. shits will be pushed back to Syria where the Assad regime forces can give them another spanking.

The Iraqi Air Force has already offered support but they have limited capability.

I'd like to think that any Iranian influence is in support of the Kurds though I do not know how the Iranian regime interacts with the people of Kurdistan. They do have hatred of I. S. in common though, that's for sure.

I have my fingers crossed that some positive action will soon take place, rather than politicians just talking, talking... it will be very interesting to see what (if anything) happens.

I couldn't care what they are doing, it's 3,000 miles away.

In the past every time Britain arms one of these groups they eventually use those arms against Britain. There has to be a strong argument for leaving the lot of them to it.

    CBS:
ERBIL, Iraq - Masrour barsani is the head of Kurdish intelligence service, which is helping pick the targets for U. S. pilots in support of Kurdish forces on the ground.

The U. S airstrikes against ISIS are "very useful," he told CBS News. Kurdish fighters are thankful for U. S. support, but he adds: "but I don't think it's enough to defeat ISIS."

"ISIS is still very intact in Syria. ISIS still feels secure in areas like Mosul and Tal Afer," barsani said. "We believe the strikes should target the nerve system and the leadership of ISIS wherever they may be."

And by that, he said, he also means Syria, where he would like to see U. S. airstrikes against ISIS.

barsani told CBS News the Kurds are talking to the White House about major support for the Kurdish Military, known as the Peshmerga.

"We are asking the United States for they should help the Peshmergas with heavy armament," barsani said. "Tanks, helicopters, heavy armaments, MRAPs especially, you know, because they are very important."

MRAPs are armored troops carriers. The Peshmerga CBS News met looked like they could use them. There was evidence of a battle, won. But all the weapons they reloaded were light -- no artillery, no effective armor.

So imagine how they feel about the sound of American jets.

"Thank you America, thank you Obama, thank you America military," one soldier said.

Iraq had been building a future. But its aspirations are now occupied by a past it cannot escape. CBS News found families -- what's left of them -- running from ISIS's brand of religious extremism. A woman named Nadiya said the men of her village were herded behind a school. There was a shooting. A boy came to tell the women what he saw: All the men were being killed. She says they didn't believe such news coming from a little boy.

With the men, more than 100, in a mass grave, Nadiya said the women were loaded into dump trucks and taken to a city to be given away as prizes to ISIS soldiers. She escaped.

"My friends are all captive," Nadiya told CBS News. "I don't know anything about my brothers, but most of all I want my mother. Tell them I just want my mother."

BBC News - Islamic State: RAF jets strike first targets in Iraq

    By Jonathan Beale:

RAF jets have carried out their first strikes on Islamic State targets in Iraq, attacking a "heavy weapon position" and an armed pick-up truck.

The Ministry of Defence said the attacks were in support of Kurdish units in the north-west of the country.

The strikes - by two GR4 Tornados - came four days after parliament approved military action, and were said to be "successful".

BBC News - UK troops training Kurdish forces in Iraq, says MoD

A "specialist team" of 12 UK soldiers is training Kurdish forces fighting Islamic State militants in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has said.

It said troops from the Yorkshire Regiment were training Iraqi Kurds to use UK-supplied heavy machine guns.

The soldiers are expected to spend a week in Irbil, in Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq.

Royal Air Force Tornado jets based in Cyprus have been flying combat missions over Iraq since September.

The UK training mission comes amid heavy fighting between Syrian Kurds and IS forces in the town of Kobane, in Syria.

Last month, the Ministry of Defence announced it was supplying Kurdish forces, known as the Peshmerga, with 40 heavy machine guns, as well as thousands of rounds of ammunition.

British soldiers are in Iraq training the Kurdish peshmerga forces battling Islamic State jihadists, the Ministry of Defence in London said Saturday.

A "small, specialist team" is operating in Erbil, the capital of Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, training peshmerga how to use the heavy machine guns Britain supplied in September.

The deployment was approved by Defence Secretary Michael Fallon, a ministry spokeswoman said.

"The government has previously made clear its intention to provide training to the peshmerga as part of the continued effort to assist in the fight against ISIL (Islamic State)," the spokeswoman said.

"The defence secretary has approved the deployment of a small, specialist team of non-combat army trainers which is now in the Arbil area providing instruction on operating, employing and maintaining the heavy machine guns that were gifted by the UK last month."

Biker gangs are helping the Kurds fight the Islamic State!

This growing presence of German and Dutch bikers taking up arms against the Islamic State happened only days after members from a notorious Netherlands-based gang were told that they were not breaking the law by traveling to Kobane and other cities in Syria to fight the Islamic State, which apparently is only illegal if you join a foreign force that is considered a terrorist organization, and the Kurds are not considered as such.

The clubs have stated through social media that some members have also helped distribute food and aid to Yazidis in a refugee camp. Between firefights and food handouts, these fearless Dutch and German riders are talking the talk and walking the walk.
