Today I'm sampling Poacher's Choice from the the Badger Brewery, owned by Hall and Woodhouse, in Blandford St Mary, Dorset.

It's a relatively strong, dark, fruity ale which has 'notes of damson and liquorice', and you really can taste the liquorice. To be honest I don't think I would have ever chosen this ale, it was a gift, but it is fucking tremendous. Very good beer, really tasty, goes down a treat.

I'm having a bottle of Old Growler Porter this evening, a robust, dark beer brewed by the Nethergate Brewery in Essex.

Nethergate were awarded Brewery of the Year 2012 by the Good Pub Guide, and Old Growler has twice won CAMRA Champion Winter Beer of Britain. But it's still good at the height of summer.

I used to drink ale more when I was younger, these days I'm more of a lager drinker most of the time, although I did have a couple at my leaving drinks, including one called Bohemian Rhapsody which was rather nice.

Ale drinkers, if you're ever in Lincoln, go to the Strugglers Inn, it's a cracking little pub for real ale.

This evening I'm enjoying some Old Thumper, as recommended by my boss earlier today.

Old Thumper is a pretty famous beer brewed by the Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire. As it's description says on the website it is a surprisingly delicate strong ale. I've had mine in the fridge and it's quite refreshing after walking the dog on this hot summer evening.
