    Default Pan's Labyrinth

This film was a great disappointment to me, not what I expected at all.

I bought this film expecting fabulous magic and monsters, but it is actually a very slow paced rather serious period drama. It's actually a brilliant movie, you can't fault the sets, locations, cast, cinematography etc etc. But it simply wasn't what I wanted it to be.

It had the best line I've heard (or read) in a film in a long while. As the heroine Mercedes literally shoved a sharp blade into Kapitans evil mouth she cooly says 'you're not the first pig I've gutted' as she swiftly slid the sharp blade across to rip open his cheek leaving him with smile larger than the jokers.

    You go girl!

I liked it. Kinda' like a dark and moody, more adult Labyrinth - but without David Bowie in Jodhpurs. Now that is scary.

It's the story of a young girl who has to go and live with her new stepfather who is an army Captain fighting against guerilla forces in the Spanish Civil War.

She embarks on a fantasy adventure involving mythical creatures and places, but this is really just a backdrop to what's actually taking place in reality.

    Here is what I thought...

RUN to your local video store and rent this movie. It is incredible and EVERYTHING that everyone said about it, which is rare these days. It is an adult fairy tale and I would be wary of having children watch it as it is R rated and does deal with VERY adult themes, war, bloody death, and pretty scary beasts, etc.

The story is in Spanish so I watched the English subtitles WHICH is actually better in my opinion because you are forced to focus and watch the screen and then you will not miss any of the truely amazing sets, scenes and monsters/beasts/fairies, etc.

I loved every second of it from the begining to the end. Highly recommended.
