I love a little sword and sorcery, this however unfortunately shades into comparison with more recent films of the genre, namely The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
Although visualy appealing, and a wonderful supporting cast, I couldn't help but compare how it looked against Peter Jackson's far greater epic portrayal of LOTR. The characters needed fleshing out more, it all seemed to be rushed and crammed into a more audience friendly 90 minutes.
The dialogue was poor, and the acting suprisingly wooden from such a great cast. John Malkovich was hardly in it, Jeremy Irons character was simply never given chance to evolve, and Robert Carlisle simply doesn't seem to suit action or fantasy.
Sienna Guillory, who was the best thing about Resident Evil II, made for good eye candy but sadly nothing else. The only character that I did make an attachment to was the computer generated dragon, and only in a "dumb animal" kind of way.
The story borrowed from other,
better tales and is pretty much a bog standard good vs evil yarn. I've not got a problem with that, why fix something that isn't boken? But the writing was simply too shallow, I feel this is done deliberately to appeal to the younger market and just alienates itself from the rest of the cinema going public.
I've been quite unforgiving with this
review, and painted a rather bleak picture, it's not all bad though. If you can forget the quality of LOTR and the original Star Wars Trilogy, and are content with the likes of Harry Potter, you will still enjoy this acceptable fantasy film.
The special effects, and locations, are still very good. I just wish the characters had been written in by Joss Wheedon, and the battle scenes directed by Peter Jackson.
Eragon is Book One of The Inheritance Trilogy by Christopher Paolini, and despite this installments faults I will be going to watch the next two films. With fingers crossed.
