Between June 2004 and Jan 2005 our debut album was recorded. The album, produced on 8-Track consisted of seven songs of hallucinogenic weirdness, cosmic horror and stoned bliss. Lyrically inspired by William Blake, Arthur Machen, Gustave Meyrink, William Hope Hodgson and Philip k. Dick, "Albion" was released through Nasoni records of Berlin to rave reviews most notably Julian Cope's August album of the month on his Head Heritage website where he described "Albion" as "Evoking the Wodenist soul of Northern England like no-one else does, spunking cosmic cum across the canopy of the earth"
Earthling Society - Plastic Jesus... A couple of gigs followed playing with Nik Turners Space Ritual, Steve Hillage and Arthur Brown and a support slot to Julian Cope at Manchester during his Dark Orgasm tour. Then we decided to go back to the studio and record the follow up to "Albion."
Again, we used the same primitive tools and 8-Track recording techniques but with a better understanding of it's limited capabilities.
"Plastic Jesus and the third eye blind" -a title that summarises the consumerist Christian ideals. Where the teachings of Jesus Christ have been mutated to suit the mega money spinning corporation of the church of or Lord plc and it's blind shepherd-less flock -where the teaching of 'the kingdom of heaven is within' is frowned upon and deemed unacceptable.
>Musically the album is a muscular brother to the ambient "Albion" incorporating a more space rock approach while maintaining the kraut /groove ethic. "Plastic Jesus..." also introduces the keyboard wizardry of synth player Joe Orban whose Vangelis / Bladerunner style playing puts an epic feel to the proceedings, totally capturing the vision of the songs
PLASTIC JESUS & THE 3RD EYE BLIND> On to the songs...
Council House Mystics
I was corresponding with Bobby Beausoleil [musician, occultist and ex-member of the Manson family] about possible artwork for the second album. I am a big fan of his 'Lucifer Rising' soundtrack and he in turn loved 'Albion' saying that he could hear elements of his own music within that album.
Anyway, during the e-mails I mentioned writing a song called 'Council House Mystics' about everyday people being magicians and that all day to day happening involve some sort of magick act that they are completely unaware of.. Bobby knew exactly were I was coming from and submitted some ideas for artwork which where brilliant but a little too light for the nature of the album. Again it uses the Funkadelic / Elevators ethic 'The kingdom of heaven is within' with the lyric "We don't want your religion here. nor your curtain twitching Christian fears, don't want your mosques of hate upon our streets, we are free to deal in our own beliefs."
Kosmik Suite No.1
The first of the 2 suites, this one is in 3 parts.
Third Eye Blind
This is a Funkadelic meets Gong style funkathon with a vocal mantra inspired by Philip K. Dick's quote on Julian Cope's 'Jehovahkill' which reads: "Whom the gods notice they destroy", like Aleister Crowley who was reduced to the shell of man after conducting the Rite of Pan in Paris. You don't munch about with the gods.
>Earthling Society - Band Midnight On The Golden Mile
The golden mile is a stretch of Promenade in Blackpool lit up with arcades and lap dancing bars. It's a mile swarming of drunken munchwits on stag nights fighting and mauling drunk knickerless girls on their hen nights. I walked it one time while tripping on mushrooms and it was like some kaleidoscopic Roman orgy... far out!!
Making Reality History
Our attempt at marrying Ash Ra Tempel and the MC5. In the end it sounded like Earthling Society playing Freak n' Roll!!
Plastic Jesus
This is a bit like the freakout parts from Red Crayola's 'Parable From An Arable Land'. The voice over is Philip K.Dick. A man whose genius excelled through drugs and religion but which, in the end, destroyed him...
Psychick Sunday(Hallucinations In The Airscape)
A Neu!/Agitation free style instrumental... very motorik!!
Girls Talk
My Attempt at Can's 'I'm So Green' rhythmic approach with a sunny 60's Euro-pop / psych style. The lyrics are about what seem to men the mundane thoughts and actions of women's lives. Of course they're not and men are just assholes, that's why the song builds up to a cosmic crescendo to celebrate the might of mother earth and her valkyries.
Kosmik Suite no.2
This is a 20 minute epic in five parts about the way the world powers are ripping the heart out and raping the corpse of mother earth.
Ginungagap
A haunting Popl Vuh style instrumental inspired by 'Aguirre' and 'In Den Garten Pharaos'.
We're Not Gonna Make It
A cosmic rocker of epic proportions. Joe's Vangelis keyboards and dense melodies are awesome giving it an epic / proggy feel to the song.
Ragnarok
Starts like a cosmic funky jam with dub guitars and jazzy piano then descends into a freeform cosmic entropy that has been described as Jaws on acid!!!
Mimir's Spring
Joe's Eno-esque keyboard piece is a meditative moment based on the opening segue of the suite.
The Black Heart of The Sun
Rounds up the song with a hazy landing based around part 2 of the song. I play some Dave Gilmour inspired guitar which plays in and around the beautiful French horn which was recorded by Joe.
Earthling Society will be playing Nasoni Records' 10 years anniversary show, set to be held September 23, Die Insel, Berlin - Germany.
