Britney Spears to open MTV Awards this Sunday
Britney Spears is slated to open the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, it was announced today (September 3).
The pop star, whose botched 'comeback' performance at last year's ceremony made headlines, will appear one more time at the awards show, which is set to take place September 7 in Los Angeles.
MTV has not announced what Spears will do to open the show, but it reportedly will not involve another performance.
"I can't wait to see what she does to kick off this year's show, MTV Networks Music President Van Toffler said in a statement.
When discussing her decision to take part in the event once again, Spears said: "MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMA - I'm excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated."
Spears is nominated for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year for 'Piece Of Me'.
The star recently appeared in VMA promos alongside British comedian Russell Brand, who will be hosting the event.

Singer Britney Spears will "kick off" this year's MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, it is announced.
But MTV said that instead of performing at Sunday's event in Los Angeles, her appearance would feature something "fun and unexpected".
Her comeback performance of Gimme More, which opened last year's show, was widely criticised.

Britney Spears opens the 2008 MTV VMAs
Britney Spears opened the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles tonight, and showed off her acting skills in the process.
Spears, who recently made an appearance on TV show ‘How I Met Your Mother’, starred in a short comedy sketch with ‘Superbad’ actor Jonah Hill, before being filmed walking from her dressing room to the stage to introduce the ceremony.
Walking on stage, Spears received a standing ovation from the crowd, including the likes of Fall Out Boy, The Jonas Brothers and Kid Rock.
Spears also picked up the award for Best Female Video for her song ‘Piece Of Me’, and made a brief thank you speech in which she thanked God and her two sons whom she said inspire her every day. Spears was cheered on by her recently re-hired manager Larry Rudolph, the man responsible for her meteoric rise to fame as a teenager.
This year’s ceremony is hosted by Brit comedian Russell Brand, who achieved fame in the US thanks to his role in the movie ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’.
Brand used part of his opening speech to appeal to viewers to vote for Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama, and made fun of Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, including the news that her teenage daughter is pregnant.

Britney Spears swept the board at the MTV Video Music Awards show in Los Angeles winning three gongs.
Troubled singer Britney Spears swept the board at the MTV Video Music Awards show in Los Angeles.
The 26-year-old, whose performance at last year's show was widely panned, won best video, best pop video and best female video for Piece Of Me.
Spears, who did not sing at the event, thanked "God first and foremost for just blessing me like this".
The show was hosted by British comic Russell Brand and featured performances by Kanye West and Christina Aguilera.
Rihanna, Kid Rock and the Jonas Brothers also performed at the event, which took place on Sunday evening at the Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
Spears has suffered a year of health problems and legal difficulties which saw her lose custody of her children, while her father James has taken legal control of her affairs.
Brand, who has appeared with Spears in advertisements for the show - along with an elephant in the room - praised his co-star in an interview with the BBC's Peter Bowes.
"She seems ever so sweet, but some people have been ever so battered by fame," the 33-year-old said.
"She's been kicked in all directions by the media. She's a little bruised, but she's a very sweet, lovely person."
Spears' video for Piece of Me beat Chris Brown's Forever, Burnin' Up by the Jonas Brothers, When I Grow Up by the Pussycat Dolls and The Ting Tings' Shut Up And Let Me Go to the coveted prize.
Brand praised Spears when he spoke to the BBC's Peter Bowes
She had been nominated 16 times before but never won.
Brand said the night marked the "launch of a very new Britney Spears era".
"Consider this the resurrection of Britney Spears," he said. "If there was a female Christ, it's Britney."
During his innuendo-laden opening monologue, Brand discussed the upcoming US presidential election.
"Some people, I think they're called racists, say America is not ready for a black president," he said.
"But I know America to be a forward-thinking country because otherwise why would you have let that retard and cowboy fella be president for eight years.
"We were very impressed. we thought it was nice of you to let him have a go, because, in England, he wouldn't be trusted with a pair of scissors."
Kanye West closed the show with a performance, after having fallen out with MTV following last year's ceremony.
He had threatened to boycott the awards after losing out in all five categories he was nominated for, while in 2006 he publicly complained about not winning best video at the MTV Europe awards.
Last year's big winners were Justin Timberlake with four awards, including top male artist, and R&B star Rihanna, who won video of the year for Umbrella.

Re: Britney Spears makes a clean sweep at MTV Awards
Britney - reborn? Back in favour at MTV. Oh that would be difficult in my opinion.
All the awards nominated for - won - oh dear. That aint going to turn a poor womans head is it?
I always think of those coconut shys in the old funfairs. Once one has been knocked off its pedestal - it is set up again.
Look after yourself and your children.
I finally looked up the words to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" just now. I wish I hadn't.
I used to enjoy this one Nirvana track - when I didn't understand what Kurt was slurring at me "I'm a Beatle"?
So Britney - MTV acclaim?
"Smells like "bull ****" or I aint a mulatto!
