Around 30,000 homes and Blackpool Victoria Hospital have been left without water after an "emergency situation" cut supply.
Householders across the town reported a drop in water pressure before the supply dried up completely at around 6pm yesterday.
A problem in a pipe between Stocks Resevoir and Devonshire Road Resevoir has resulted in the level of the water dropping dramatically. In turn it means there isn't enough water for the Tower at Leys Road to pump to water to homes.
Scuffles broke out in some local shops as bottled water sold out. Supermarkets in the area reported selling out of water in less than two hours.
Water returned shortly after midnight last night but this was just a temporary measure to accommodate the morning rush as just after 9:30am today water was switched off again as experts try to get to the root of the problem and fix it.
It's not yet known when normal supply will return although it has been announced that the problem has now been isolated to a valve at the water Tower at Leys Road and United Utilities are currently working on it.
United Utilities is moving more bowsers into Blackpool so locals can stock up ahead of the teatime rush as work continues this afternoon to sort out the problem at the Water Tower.
Meanwhile the water problem could be spreading as homes and businesses in Highcross, Poulton and Layton are reporting low pressure water or loss of service altogether and several schools in the Blackpool area have had to close.
An up to date list of current water bowser locations will be available on the local radio website
