Default Italian Job stunt lands Mini driver a ban

A schoolboy who drove his Mini around a university campus in an Italian Job style stunt was banned from driving..

Former Harrow pupil Alex Fiallos returned to his halls of residence after a night out and drove his £4,000 car around the grounds at speeds of 30mph.

He ended up crashing into the bottom of some steps in a scene reminiscent of the 1969 cult classic movie starring Michael Caine.

Fiallos - a first year Hispanic Studies student at the University of Bristol - pleaded guilty to drink-driving at Bristol Magistrates' Court.

He was banned from driving for one year, fined £115 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £50.

His solicitor Daniel Berman described the incident as a "lack of judgement" by an otherwise "excellent student" who achieved three As at A level.

The incident happened last month after Fiallos had driven the silver Mini - which his parents had given him the day before - from their home in Ealing, west London, to Bristol.

He parked outside the Wills Hall student digs in Stoke Bishop, Bristol, where he had lived for two months.

Fiallos then caught a taxi to nearby Clifton, where he drank cider with friends, and returned by taxi at around 1am on October 27.

But he feared his second-hand car would be clamped so he jumped behind the wheel and drove it into the halls complex with a friend in the passenger seat.

He drove through the muddy grounds and paths at around 30mph until the front tyres blew out and he crashed facing a steep flight of steps, damaging the front of the car.

A police helicopter, six security guards and two police patrol cars were called to the scene and Fiallos was arrested for drink-driving.

He gave a breath test reading of 48 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

His solicitor Mr Berman blamed the incident on a fit of "youthful exuberance".

He told the court: "He did not know what he was doing. He did not take a coherent route and found himself at the foot of some steps just round the corner from where he had parked the car.

"This was a lack of judgement by a man with an excellent background and character.

"He immediately admitted upon the arrival of the police that he was the person who was driving the car. I do not wish to excuse his conduct and neither do either of his parents wish for any excuse to be made.

"This was an aberration by a young man who will hopefully go on to far better things." The court heard that Fiallos was a Red Cross volunteer and also a keen tennis and football player.

Magistrate Peter Lewis told him he was lucky not to be charged with a more serious offence and added: "You are lucky that no-one got seriously hurt by what you did."

Bristol University refused to revealed what action, if any, has been taken against Fiallos.

A spokesman said: "The University will take whatever action is appropriate to punish dangerous and disorderly behaviour and to safeguard people, property and reputation."
