I don't remember what I took that far back.

I think when I was at secondary school I had mainly exercise books and the text books were given out in lessons each day. We rarely got to take them home, unless it was for maths homework like Gem said. My son got his given to him at the start of the year and doesn't have anywhere to store them at school. They have lockers, but they're only for the kids who have school dinners.

I don't even remember taking exercise books a lot of the time. I had one black biro, one red, a pencil and one half of a cassette case which I used as a straight edge to underline some things with the red biro.

In the latter half of secondary school (the most important bit, tragically), I never bothered with a bag or anything either. I'd nick a pen from my form tutor in morning registration and that was about it.

They have to take their own highlighters and everything nowadays. A black and red biro and half a cassette case would probably get them a detention. At the beginning of term they send a list home with all the stuff they have to have, the school only provides text books. I'm still not sure why they must have biros because all their work has to be written with a fountain pen.
