Default Re: Question re Almonds

It depends on the yield Six, this year was exceptional and it was from only 50 trees. A bad year could be 100 kgs.
We no longer have any interest in it, a local guy keeps the fields clean, sprays the trees and harvests the fruit for himself and he's welcome to it.

The reason it was done so quickly though is because there is a new machine out that does a tree in seconds.
A large tractor with what looks like an upturned umbrella on the front noses up to the tree, opens the umbrella around the tree, a giant vibrator shakes the tree. From there they fall into a base compartment and are stripped of their husk (not shell) and loaded into a trailer.

We used to do it the old fashioned way with sticks and nets, but the end result was that they cost more to collect and peel than they could be sold for.

Interestingly, Spain imports almonds from California.

As you omitted a question mark, I gather that needs no answer?

Default Re: Question re Almonds

Is there something going on I don't know about? (almond related)

We've got a solitary almond tree at the bottom of the garden - I don't even think I've venture down there to be honest - so I haven't got a clue when they're ready. It's the same with the olive trees - we've got a huge one that I have to pass everyday to get out of the house - but I haven't got a clue when the olives are ready, or what to do with them when they're ready. I tend to pick them and throw them at the dog...
