I went to see Mossa' last night, and I can't stop my mouth aching from all the grinning.
Beyond the football chants, Morrissey puts on a good show.
Supported by the strange and hauting tunes of
Kristeen young who sounds a little like a Kate Bush taking hard drugs, and the ever pleasing
Sons and Daughters - who just get better everytime I hear them - Mossa appears to be going Gothic with his support..?
"Welcome opera lovers", Mossa says with open arms, as he and his band of tormentors take a bow, centre stage. One of my friends leans across, 'he's quite dishy isn't he' she says to my girlfriend - not that I could comment on this, but there is still the arm of 'this charming man', even if he is old enough to be your postman. You cant'd help but be aware how strange it is to be seeing bands play in the Opera house. The whole scene works perfectly though, as Morrissey strolls with easy into 'The First of the Gang to Die', singing almost as if he's narrating a play, with much pulling of the face and gestering to the audience.
The set was made up of mainly new titles from his latest album 'Ringleader of the Tormentors', with 'Life is a Pigsty' as the central piece. However, there were some classics thrown into the mix, most noticably Smiths songs like: 'Still Ill', Girlfriend in a Coma' and 'How Soon is Now'.
Morrissey is such fun to watch and he performs with the air of Shakespearian antics. My only complaint was that it was over all too quick. After pleasing us all with 'How soon is Now' the band left for a quick change - the crowd chantting 'Mossa, Mossa, Mossa...' - then returned and played 'Irish Blood, English Heart', bowed and the lights came up. So long and thanks for all the fish...
