    I like the video, it's very "90's" isn't it?

They're still on my wanted list but I can't seem to find a copy of their albums for less than a tenner.

I'm waiting till they give em away for 6.99

Default Dresden Dolls at Manchester Academy II

I watched The Dolls at The Academy II last night, they were fantastic.

Support were a band called DeVotchKa, based in the States they're a kind of punk/indie/East European folk fusion. Similar to the Gogol Bordello and highly entertaining, I got a copy of their CD and would definitely watch them again live. The lady tuba player was impressive alone!

Inbetween the main and suppport acts were performances by, I'm guessing (possibly incorrectly), Brigade members. The Brigade are part of the fan following who turn up at Dresden Dolls gigs and are given the opportunity to showcase their talents. They comprise of everything from musicians to performance artists, first time I saw the Dolls we were treated to a belly dancing display by one of the audience members. Quite good it was too.
Last night a percussion group named Bang On played, they were a duo playing music on junk basically, and later a girl performed her acrobatic tricks. Both highly entertaining and made for a truly eclectic evening.

The Dolls themselves were amazing. The talent that these two performers posess is extraordinary, Amanda Palmer's voice was incredible a truly great singer. The songs themselves are beautifully written and she performs them impeccably both vocally and playing the keyboard, for me though the secret of the Dolls true appeal is the enormous talent and skill of Brian Viglione on drums.
The set list was a good mix of old songs, and new songs from their latest album. They also threw in a couple of good covers, namely Amsterdam originally by Jacques Brel and of course the ever popular Sabbath cover War Pigs.
My only complaint was the lack of latest single Sing, I was quite looking forward to it. Still never mind, it was a fantastic night anyway and one I'd highly recommend.

I think I would have to concur, the Dolls were fantastic...

Although, the show wasn't as good as their previous, up-close gigs. Call me a junkie trying in vain to chase that first high, but something was missing on Saturday night. Unfortunately, gone are the days of seeing them for a fiver - try three times that. Gone to are the smaller gigs, they need a bigger room now to pack all the bowler-hat-wearing Goths into - ya' gotta' love 'em.

There was no 'Good Day'... which I personally missed its absence. Good to see the return of 'Amsterdam' though, I don't think I've heard them play that since that first time we saw them at the Life Cafe in Manchester. I think it really captures the spirit of their 'Punk Cabaret'.

I thought the setlist was a little targeted at their more mainstream fans, which is why I was also surprised at there being no 'sing'. Which is by far their most 'easy-listen' song. Good to see they still play 'War Pigs', which has become an opportunity for Brian to really show off his drumming talent - which he didn't get much chance to do at this gig - a real crowd pleaser.

Also, a nice tip of the bowler hat to Mosser, with a cover of the Smiths' 'I know it's over'. (Morrissey was also playing down the road at the Manchester Apollo - local boy does good).

above all a good show, good to see the Dolls again since their shocking disappearance from the Leeds line up last year.

    D

There is a morrissey thread about the concert I went. Please feel free to post any comments on him smelling of wee there... I thank you.

You're just upset because he made you drink three samples of his stale wee wee.
