I watched The Dolls at The Academy II last night, they were fantastic.
Support were a band called
DeVotchKa, based in the States they're a kind of punk/indie/East European folk fusion. Similar to the Gogol Bordello and highly entertaining, I got a copy of their CD and would definitely watch them again live. The lady tuba player was impressive alone!
Inbetween the main and suppport acts were performances by, I'm guessing (possibly incorrectly), Brigade members. The Brigade are part of the fan following who turn up at Dresden Dolls gigs and are given the opportunity to showcase their talents. They comprise of everything from musicians to performance artists, first time I saw the Dolls we were treated to a belly dancing display by one of the audience members. Quite good it was too.
Last night a percussion group named Bang On played, they were a duo playing music on junk basically, and later a girl performed her acrobatic tricks. Both highly entertaining and made for a truly eclectic evening.
The Dolls themselves were amazing. The talent that these two performers posess is extraordinary, Amanda Palmer's voice was incredible a truly great singer. The songs themselves are beautifully written and she performs them impeccably both vocally and playing the keyboard, for me though the secret of the Dolls true appeal is the enormous talent and skill of Brian Viglione on drums.
The set list was a good mix of old songs, and new songs from their latest album. They also threw in a couple of good covers, namely Amsterdam originally by Jacques Brel and of course the ever popular Sabbath cover War Pigs.
My only complaint was the lack of latest single
Sing, I was quite looking forward to it. Still never mind, it was a fantastic night anyway and one I'd highly recommend.
