If you see his films as dreamscapes for example, that may help.

They don't need to have a linear story-line, once you get past the traditional start-middle-ending way of thinking, things make a lot more sense.

I know I can't convince you otherwise, but he is as important to cinema as Kubrick.
No they don't, they still make no sense.

If anyone can explain to me the meaning behind any of Lynch's films then I will accept that they are worthwhile. But no one ever can. It's just self obsessed toss, and I reckon most people who say they like David Lynch films simply do it to make themselves look cool. It's like the Emperors New Clothes, people just go along with the idea that only cool or clever people get David Lynch films so they say they like them, Never found one that could explain what the fuck was going on though, and that includes Lynch himself. My guess is he's taking the fucking piss.

Have you seen Blue Velvet or the Straight Story?

Both of those (espesh' the Straight Story) are pretty easy to follow.

I would imagine there are some folks who try to make themselves seem "deeper" and "cooler" than they are, say they like Lynch.

I fucking love Lynch though! No messin'!

Actually, his last film, "Inland Empire" was very hard-going and I have yet to see it again. I don't really want to if i'm honest.

If even I don't like it, what chance have the less-cool amongst you got?

Also, I don't like to have everything explained, I prefer to think about it and come up with my own theories as to "what the fuck just happened???"

Lynch also inspires my creativity, and I sometimes get in a proper artistic state of mind after watching his viddies.

I doubt he's taking the piss.

If i'm doing a painting for example, I will not be happy with selling it or whatever, if I am not completely happy that I have done the best job I could. If it is not perfect (in my eyes) it is worthless and I would feel as though I was taking the piss out of the customer.

I couldn't do it and i'm sure Mr Lynch has the same standards of his own.

Anyways, since when did dreams make sense?

I have seen straight story and it's pretty crap.

The bloke's definitely on a wind up. I can understand what you're saying, about his films being like dreams or something. But in that case I still think they're made very badly. Plus, hearing other people's dreams is the most pointless exercise known to man. Lynch makes self indulgent claptrap, you basically said so yourself.

    No I didn't!

It's not self-indulgent anyway, I enjoy it as well as he does.

I doubt he gives a crap. He makes stuff which is meaningless to everyone else, it must be self indulgent.

And I still say it doesn't even work well on the level you claim. I can find inspiration in almost anything, and there are a lot of more interesting and beautiful things to see than the crap he turns out.

Why would I be having such a passionate argument about something that is meaningless?

    It does work.

    For me.

    For you.

    Maybe not.

You can argue passionately over something meaningless, it's the argument that means something.

But the fact remains that what he produces is meaningless, you said yourself that you place your own meaning into it. Like watching clouds, so nothing really remarkable about it.

I like David Lynch films. I don't like them to be cool or appear clever and I'm not gonna pretend I fully get them either because I don't. I don't think you're supposed to get them, that's the point. With his films, you could ask what was going on and you'd get different answers from different people because you see it how you want to see it most of the time. Maybe half the entertainment is in your own head because he gives you the characters and some weird random stuff and you make a lot of the story up yourself. The good thing about his films is that they make you think and leave something behind because they're so weird.

I interpret some of the imagery in my own way, but most of the rest of the films do make some sort of sense.

It' not just like - Here's a human ear, there's someone carrying a log, oh look - a woman who lives behind a radiator!

It's not that random. There is stuff inbetween that strings it all together.

Lost Highway for example - I love it. It makes sense but it doesn't.

You just have to tilt yer head a bit and forget how things usually play out in films.

Go with the flow or don't watch it.

Bollocks. It is all random nonsense, it means nothing.
