Jason and the Argonauts
It's my favourite film EVER!
Made in 1963 it was way ahead of it's time. The special effects wouldn't look out of place in a modern movie.![]()
It's usually on over Chrimbo, anyone know when exactly?
Re: Jason and the Argonauts
I think that's why my firstborn was named Jason, he arrived in Dec 64 and was the first of many to follow around that period, Ringo Starr's boy arrived later.

Re: Jason and the Argonauts
is that the one with the skeletons that come back to life?

Re: Jason and the Argonauts
That's the one Alphy, and the bronze statue of Achilles.

Re: Jason and the Argonauts
My favourite bit is when the old blind man who had to eat scraps turns the tables and he gets to eat like a king.
Re: Jason and the Argonauts
Oh yeah, the Harpies.

Re: Jason and the Argonauts
With some fantastic special effects from Ray Harryhausen.
I think the effects he produced are still better than some of the amazing, glossy computer graphics produced today. And I'm a firm believer in the art of CGI. However, it is an art. Too often I think people believe that a special effect is just a trick. But it has to be lovingly crafted by a skilled artist. And Ray Harryhausen breathed life and charater into everyone of his creations. Everyone of the skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts seems to have it's own personallity and agenda. Whereas the droids in Star Wars Episode 1 (and I am a Star Wars fan) look a little too special effecty for my liking. A characteristic George Lucas fixes in later in Episode 3 when the droids seem a little more 'quirky' and imaginative.
Special effects are small pieces of art, and Ray Harryhausen is a trully exceptional artist, a shame he no longer works in special effects. Not that he'd get much done at the age of 87...
