    How's your French, Jools?

Mine's nowhere near good enough to sit through a film and find it enjoyable. I'm considering watching some in French to help me. My attention only goes as far as singing subtitled kids tv songs at the moment.

I might see if I can pick some of your recommendations up locally. I don't know what's good and what's not when it comes to French films, so I've bought some right junk while I've been here. It doesn't really motivate me enough to make me want to watch them without the subtitles after I've got the gist of the story in English.

Are you having face to face lessons? I need some of those, but the only English classes locally are full of pensioners who don't get any further because they use them as a social event. I'm gonna part with a bit of cash in January and go to Montpellier and do an intensive though (with people around my own age) - it's just they're so expensive.

If you are just going to get a couple you should get

    Jean De Florette
    Manon Des Sources

    the same guy also did

    La Gloire De Mon Pere

which I think is top notch too

Those films should appeal to pretty much anyone I think, there are loads of great French films, but without knowing what sort of stuff you like I wouldn't know what to recommend

I am having face to face lessons with a load of pensioners, but they get on with it, one guy is like a spoilt kid though who acts like he doesn't want to be there and is just awkward the whole time, dunno what he goes for unless he just likes arguing

I'll watch pretty much anything when it comes to films, it's just I won't watch them again if I didn't really enjoy it. I'll have a look for the ones you've recommended though because I was supposed to start watching stuff today (a goal I'd set myself because I've exhausted most of the 'learn french by cd's'. I've just finished going through the pimsleur ones again, so I need something else).

I found it set me back being in a class with only pensioners. The British expats around here are the kind that really don't progress, but they go just to meet up with other English people, so you don't get to learn much. When I joined, some had been going for over two years and they were still only able to say things like where they lived, their name, etc.
