OK, time for another one...
From fantastic director Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins, Memento) comes the movie adaptation of the Christopher Priest Novel 'The Prestige', starring the chameleon-like, Christian Bale (American Psycho, Batman Begins) and Hugh Jackman (X-men and soon to hit Wolverine).![]()
For those of you who haven't read the novel I recommend you get a copy and sit down with a good few hours to spare, as you will not put it down.... read more about the book here (clickety). The story behind the novel is that of the effects of a rivalry between two Victorian stage magicians at the turn of the 20th century.
The story highlights the differences between the two magicians and their approach to magic and theatrics. Alfred Borden (played in the movie by Bale) is of working class background and has a deep respect for understanding, devising and constructing new and ingenious tricks for the stage - however, the real flair of a magician, he believes, is in the performance. Rupert Angier (played by Jackman) is of noble background and will stop at nothing to understand how a trick is performed, be it by subterfuge or outright purchasing power.
At the centre of their rivalry, a climatic illusion both of the magicians perform but in different ways - and with eerie and unnerving conclusions.
Written through a number of personal, first-person accounts, the overall theme of this story looks at the dark secrecy and lies surrounding the lives of these stage magicians, and the lengths they will go to, to out-do one another.
The movie on the other hand...
Written by Nolan's brother (and writer of the short story behind Memento) Jonathan Nolan, the plot - although seeming (from the trailer) to follow the basic premise of the book - seems to focus on just the lives of the two magicians and their rivalry. A friendship between the two magicians has been added, possibly to add to the fact that when you read the book there is a sad feeling at the end that the two magicians would have made such good friends, if fate hadn't intervened

Hopefully this will be a class film, from a brilliant and up-and-coming director, and two fantastic actors.
The Prestige is released in the UK on 10th November... Put it in your diary...
More from me later...

Hey, that was good. Did you write all that yourself or nick it from the synopsis?
