We took a walk to the only black beach in France today. I've never been to one, so was curious about the texture, whether or not you could build sandcastles and whether you came off the beach looking dirty.
You definitely can't build with the stuff. It's a lot heavier then the 'normal' sand and the grains are much bigger.
It looks awful as you come up to it - sorta like a landfill site. A cloud went by as we got closer, so it does make it look 'dirty' in this photo.
To get to the cove you have to walk down some steep steps through the rocks - Yellow really doesn't like steep steps so was considering jumping over the edge instead.
Once on the beach, if just felt really dirty and not right. The area was lovely, but the black sand seemed to spoil it. After a while I grew to really like it though and my son decided it was the best beach he's been to - mainly because although you can't build with it, it doesn't fly in your face when people run by or stick to your makeup. You can play with balls n' stuff without getting a face full of sand and the balls bounce (they don't have to be beach balls, so you can have weighty ones).
So - I've finally felt black sand and I didn't come off the beach dirty like I thought.![]()
